German Chocolate Oatmeal Recipe

This German chocolate oatmeal is  the perfect breakfast for those who love the chocolate and coconut flavor combination of German chocolate.

My love of coconut is a relatively new thing. I’ve only liked it for about a year. Before that, you couldn’t get me to stand within ten feet of a coconut. It was like a bad date I couldn’t wait to get away from.

A white bowl sits on a wooden table filled with this German Chocolate Oatmeal Recipe.

Now, I’m not sure what changed, but I can’t seem to get enough of the stuff these days! I think part of it is that I actually worked up the nerve to try some fresh coconut. Once I did that, the real love affair began and now I even like dried coconut.

If you read this blog with any regularity at all, you know that I’m a die-hard chocolate fanatic as well. I would put chocolate on my pizza if I could get away with it. (Hmmm…. new dessert recipe??!!!) So it was only logical that I pair my old love affair with my new tryst to see what I could come up with.

The result? A bowl of oatmeal that even Mini Chef couldn’t get enough of!

WHERE DOES GERMAN CHOCOLATE COME FROM?

The original German Chocolate Cake was actually invented by a man who’s last name was “German”. Samual German, to be exact, and he wasn’t German at all. He was English! So this particular flavor combination is owed entirely to an Englishman. Thanks Mr. German!

  1. Mmm… I will definitely be trying this recipe for breakfast. I have to say, I adore my oatmeal in the morning and this looks AMAZING. I was never a big fan of coconut either until this year, but now I’m crazy about it!! Thanks for the recipe!

  4. I love coconut – unfortunately, my roommate does not! So if I make anything with it in it, I wind up eating all of it….maybe one day things will change? You have given me hope!

Mathew – There is always hope. However, that just means there’s more for you! 😉

I love the addition of cocoa in the oatmeal..a nice and scrumptious change for my son’s porridge. Thanks Tiffany!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Lydia – Thanks! It’s turning out to be a rather long-winded project, but I’ll get it done eventually! I’m sure having fun trying!

  7. Although I found some 40% Reduced Fat dried coconut flakes at Whole Foods recently, I’d prefer the nix the coconut and throw in half a cup (or a whole cup… mmm… fruit) of pitted dark sweet cherries (thawed from frozen). Oatmeal, cocoa powder, cherries and agave… Mmm… I’m saving my new coconut find for some no-bake chocolate, peanut butter and coconut cookies–and, they’re made with oats! 🙂

BTW, I’m not a fan of eggs at all… so, I’m hoping I can substitute some crumbled or blended soft tofu for the egg whites you suggest. You sure do love that protein source, don’t you? 🙂

    Love your work!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Charlena – Yes! LOL! I do love my eggs! Your substitutes sound great! Enjoy!

  8. Michelle of Chellbellz says:

its super hard for me to find real coconut flakes in the store….i hate living in this area.

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Michelle – Try ordering it on line. You can get just about anything that way these days. 🙂

  9. Any chance I can use two eggs in

  10. Anise Boudreau says:

    Hi!!

I was wondering if I can use two eggs instead of four egg whites so I don’t have to wast the yolk. Also, if two eggs would work, would you still recommend to cook it in the oatmeal and stir until they look cook?

    Thanks for the wonderful recipe!
    Anise

    1. Anonymous says:

Anise – Yes, you can use 2 whole eggs. Cooke them the same way. Just be sure it’s all cooked. You may want to stir it in a minute or 2 sooner so it has time to cook fully. Enjoy!

  11. AmyMaeJae says:

Thank-you so much for this wonderful site!! I am new to eating clean and although I am enjoying it it can be overwhelming! Your site helps me to see that I can keep this up and make a lifestyle change for good!

    1. Anonymous says:

AmyMaeJae – Yes you can! Clean eating isn’t about complications. It’s about basic, whole foods. It might take a little planning, but it’s definitely doable. You CAN do this!!

  12. Tina Borges says:

Why do you add eggs to the oatmeal? Do you have too?

    1. Anonymous says:

Tina – No, you don’t have to. I add it because it’s a great way to get that protein/carb balance without affecting the flavor of the oats.

  13. Anonymous says:

Lindsay – In my humble opinion, not at all. But you have to whisk vigorously to get them well incorporated. If you don’t mix quickly enough, then yes, you’ll end up with clumps of egg. They cook quickly in the hot oats.

  14. Meaghenfillion says:

    Thank you! This was delicious!

    1. Anonymous says:

Meaghen – Fantastic! Glad you enjoyed it!

  15. Bennyhusband says:

Is there a definite answer on the coconut oil debate? Heart disease runs in my family, and previously i was overweight, should i use the stuff in place of other oils occassionally, i cook with oil very seldom in the first place, or should i jusy avoid it?

    1. Anonymous says:

Bennyhusband – I think there will always be a debate over this. Your best bet is to talk to a registered dietitian and follow their qualified medical advice.

  16. Christine says:

Hi! So happy i found this! Im going to try it for breakfast today. One question though, do you do your oatmeal with water or milk?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

You can do it either way. With milk is obviously a little creamier, but it’s also more calories. So it all depends on what your nutritional goals are.

  17. I have a large batch now in the slow cooker that is almost ready. I never knew you can make oatmeal in the slow cooker until I started following your blog. Now eat oatmeal for breakfast every morning. I just change what I put in it everyday. Yesterday was bananas, this morning I am thinking of adding some peanut butter with bananas.

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

      Awesome! 🙂

  18. looks & sounds very tasty!

  19. I’ve been oatmeal obsessed for the past few weeks (not to mention a chocoholic for life) so this is beyond perfect. Thanks for your awesome recipes. I can’t wait to try this! I just thought…if I sprinkle some slivered almonds on top, does that make this Almond Joy oatmeal? Double yum!!!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

      I believe it does! 🙂
