FAQs
Can I Use A Different Type Of Sauce Instead Of Buffalo Sauce?
Yes, if you’re not a fan of buffalo sauce, you can try using barbecue sauce, honey mustard, or even a tangy teriyaki sauce for a different flavor profile.
Can I Substitute The Shredded Chicken With Another Protein?
Absolutely! If you prefer a different protein, you can substitute the shredded chicken with cooked and shredded turkey, beef, or even tofu for a vegetarian option.
Can I Make The Pitas Ahead Of Time?
While it’s best to assemble and enjoy the pitas fresh, you can prepare the components ahead of time and assemble them just before serving. Keep the shredded chicken, diced onion, and chopped chives refrigerated in separate containers until you’re ready to use them.
Can I Use A Different Type Of Cheese Instead Of Mozzarella?
Yes, you can experiment with different cheeses based on your preference. Some options include cheddar, pepper jack, or even crumbled feta cheese for a tangy twist.
How Can I Adjust The Spiciness Level Of The Pizza?
If you prefer a milder flavor, you can use less buffalo sauce or mix it with a milder hot sauce. Conversely, if you like it spicier, you can add extra hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the buffalo sauce.
Recipe Tips
Adjust the heat level: If you prefer a milder flavor, you can reduce the amount of buffalo sauce used or mix it with a milder hot sauce. On the other hand, if you like it spicier, you can add a few dashes of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the buffalo sauce.
Use pre-cooked chicken: To save time, you can use pre-cooked shredded chicken. Rotisserie chicken works well for this recipe, or you can use leftover cooked chicken from a previous meal.
Customize the toppings: Feel free to customize the toppings based on your preferences. You can add sliced tomatoes, avocado, lettuce, or any other vegetables you enjoy. Additionally, you can sprinkle some extra chives, crumbled bacon, or a squeeze of fresh lime juice for added flavor.
Serve with a side: Accompany the buffalo chicken whole wheat pitas with a side of fresh vegetables, such as carrot sticks, celery, or a crisp salad, to balance out the flavors and add extra nutrition to the meal.
Double the recipe: If you’re cooking for a larger group or want to have leftovers, double the recipe accordingly. This way, you’ll have extra pitas ready to enjoy for another meal or as grab-and-go snacks.
Optional Garnish
- Green onions
- A drizzle of ranch dressing
- A sprinkle of cheddar cheese or parmesan cheese
About The Ingredients
Buffalo sauce: Buffalo sauce is a tangy and spicy sauce typically made with a combination of hot sauce, butter, vinegar, and various seasonings. You can use store-bought buffalo sauce or make your own by combining hot sauce and melted butter.
Shredded chicken: Cooked chicken that has been shredded works best for this recipe. You can use leftover cooked chicken or cook chicken breasts or thighs specifically for this dish. Season the chicken with salt and pepper before cooking for added flavor.
Whole wheat pitas: Whole wheat pitas are a healthier alternative to regular white pitas, as they are higher in fiber and nutrients. Look for whole wheat pitas at your local grocery store, or consider making your own if you prefer.
Slice onion: Use a fresh onion and dice it into small pieces. You can use yellow, white, or red onion, depending on your preference.
Chopped chives: Chives add a mild onion-like flavor and a touch of freshness to the recipe. Chop them finely before adding them as a garnish.
Blue cheese sauce/dressing: Blue cheese sauce or dressing adds a creamy and tangy element to the buffalo chicken pita. You can either make your own blue cheese sauce or dressing from scratch or use a store-bought option.
Mozzarella cheese: Mozzarella cheese melts beautifully and adds a gooey texture to the pita. You can use pre-shredded mozzarella or shred a block of mozzarella yourself for the best results.
How To Make Buffalo Chicken Pizza
Gather and measure all the needed ingredients.
In a mixing bowl, combine the buffalo sauce and shredded chicken. Toss until the chicken is well coated with the sauce.
Take one whole wheat pita and lay it on a flat surface. Spread a tablespoon of buffalo sauce over the pita.
Add a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the pita.
Sprinkle the buffalo chicken over the top.
Sprinkle diced onion on top of the chicken.
Place the filled pita on a baking sheet and bake it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the pita is heated through.
Once the cheese has melted, remove the pita from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Drizzle on some additional blue cheese dressing and chopped chives as a garnish.
Cut and serve while still warm.
Storage For Leftover Pizza
To store the buffalo chicken whole wheat pitas, place them in an airtight container or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and store them in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving. For longer storage, freeze them individually wrapped and thaw them before cooking.
Freezing
Freezing is not recommended after cooking. You can, however, freeze the assembled pizza before baking it. Just wrap it well so it doesn’t dry out. Place in a preheated oven straight from the freezer. Do not thaw first.
Reheating
This pizza can be reheated in a microwave or in the oven at 325 F.
