Is Chocolate Pizza A Thing?
Oh, yes! It’s a thing! There are a crazy ton of recipes for it on the internet and even some pizza companies carry it. It’s totally a thing!
What Is Chocolate Pizza?
It’s basically a dessert pizza that uses chocolate for sauce and mostly sweet ingredients for toppings.
Who Invented Chocolate Pizza?
It’s unclear who the original inventor actually is. But what we do know is that it was developed in a western country. It is more or less an American invention. I mean… it’s chocolate pizza. How could it not be American?
Chocolate Pizza Topping Ideas
You don’t have to use strawberries and hazelnuts for this pizza. Here are some ideas for other toppings. The important thing to remember is simply to slice everything thin.
- Banana slices
- Orange slices
- Apple slices
- Kiwi slices
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Dried cranberries
- Apricots
- Nectarines
- Peaches
- Almonds
- Peanuts
- Ground cinnamon

The Crusty Possibilities
You don’t have to follow the crust recipe below. You can use any pizza crust recipe you prefer. Here are one or two you can try. Instead of putting them into a pie pan, you’ll just roll them flat for pizza crust!
Dietary Variations
If you have certain dietary requirements, here are some suggestions for making this recipe fit your lifestyle.
Make It Keto
You’ll need a low-carb or keto pie crust. These are mostly made of nuts. Here’s a good almond flour crust from All Day I Dream About Food
Make It Vegan
This is a simple switch. Just use vegan chocolate and vegan cream. Even coconut cream will work.
Make It Diary-Free
This is basically the same process as making it vegan.
Make It Gluten-Free
You’ll want to make sure the chocolate and buckwheat flour are labeled as gluten-free. The rest of the ingredients are naturally gluten-free.
Sauce Variation
- If you prefer, you can easily switch this chocolate sauce for a Nutella-like, chocolate-hazelnut spread.

About The Ingredients
2 cups light buckwheat flour – Any color will work here. But a lighter flour simply gives a lighter-colored crust. It’s more a matter of what you like visually. The flavor will be the same. Note that this cannot be substituted with whole wheat or all-purpose flour. If your crust dough is too firm or too soft, you can easily adjust it with additional flour or water as needed.
1 tsp. salt – I used pink Himalayan salt, but use whatever you normally cook or bake with.
½ cup room temperature water
7 medium strawberries – sliced or chopped.
1 cup dark chocolate – Enjoy life, Lily’s baking chocolate chips and Whole Foods 365 Sugar-Free chocolate chips are all good choices here. I find chocolate chips are the easiest to measure properly, but you can use any type of chocolate you prefer.
½ cup whipping cream – In liquid state.
2 tsp. chopped hazelnuts – Or as much as you like.
How To Make Chocolate Pizza

Gather all the measured ingredients and set them where they are in easy reach. Make the pizza dough by mixing all the crust ingredients together in a large bowl.

Preheat the oven to 350 F.

Next, use a rolling pin, to flatten the dough. You can roll it into any shape as long as you have a pan to fit it. Transfer the crust to a prepared baking sheet or pizza pan. Even a heavy large baking sheet will work fine here.

Place the pizza crust into the oven and bake it for about 8 minutes (check that it starts to turn golden brown and hardens a bit).
If the pizza crust is still soft, place it back into the oven for an extra 5 minutes or until it becomes crunchy and hardens a bit. Note: be careful not to overbake, or it will dry out.

If you have chocolate bars, chop them into smaller bits, or use chocolate chips.

Add the cream to a pot, bringing it to a near boil (once a couple of bubbles burst ), and remove it from heat.

Now that the cream is heated, add the chopped chocolate to the pot and stir until it’s combined (it will turn into a creamy, spreadable chocolate sauce).

Spread the chocolate sauce over the top of the pizza crust. Slice or chop the strawberries and add them to the crust. Then sprinkle some chopped hazelnuts over everything.

Slice and take a big bite! You can also eat this with a knife and fork if you don’t want chocolatey fingers.

How To Store Chocolate Pizza
Wrap leftovers in an airtight container or in plastic wrap and store them in the fridge.
How Long Does Chocolate Pizza Last?
If you have leftovers (send me a photo because I won’t believe it unless I see it!), you can keep this in the fridge for up to 3 or 4 days.
