Saturday Morning Waffles Recipe

Just one of these delicious Saturday morning waffles will get your weekend off to a happy start!

Yes, waffles and pancakes DID exist BEFORE Bisquick entered the world. And yes, they were good. Really good. Case in point? Mini Chef’s recent clean eating Saturday morning waffles recipe experiment.

Clean Eating Saturday Morning Waffles Recipe

I’ve made waffles before, but Mini Chef has never attempted it. So I made some small adjustments to my earlier recipes and switched flours. I’ve had some people voice their frustration at finding the whole wheat pastry flour I typically use, so I made this recipe with white whole wheat flour. It’s far easier to find, and just as clean. I believe even Walmart carries it in some areas, as does Trader Joe’s and Safeway.

I should tell you that I have a Belgian waffle maker, not a traditional waffle maker. So these waffles are big. Your yield will vary based on the size of your waffle maker. So you may have to adjust the data below for your yield if that is important to you.

You can add any flavorings to this you like. A little unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla extract, lemon or orange extract or even nut extracts like almond or hazelnut. But these are really good just plain as well.

  1. I have rice flour on hand can I use it in this recipe or do I have to go buy more flour. Thanks

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Shawanda – Rice flour won’t work for this recipe. I’m sorry.

  2. Will regular whole wheat flour or almond flour work?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Amy – Regular whole wheat will, but almond flour will not.

  3. Just made these for my girls and they love them. Thanks for the great recipes.

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

      Danita – My pleasure! 🙂

  4. Do you think these could be frozen and pulled out of freezer on week day for a quick healthy breakfast?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

      Lisa – Absolutely!!

  5. Dohp, just read your comment to frrze. Exactly what I wanted to know, lol.

  6. Hi…. I think what you are doing is wonderful and I have made a few of your recipes….delicious! My only comment is really a question….Why do you use shrimp or any other un-clean meats in some of your recipes? They are scavengers and definitely not clean.

    Thank you

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Vickey – My clean eating standards, they are clean. If you want to take that a step further due to your own personal beliefs, that’s great! But they are considered clean. They come from nature that way and are not a processed food.

  7. Hi Tiffany. Could I fry these like pancakes? I don’t have a waffle maker so frying may be a good alternative?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

      Claire – Certainly!

  8. Are there any recommended gluten free flours?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Donna – I don’t know anything about gluten free baking. Good flours are almond flour, gluten free oat flour and brown rice flour. But I have no idea how to make them work without the gluten. I highly recommend Elana’s Pantry as well as the Gluten Free Goddess. Both are excellent gluten free sites.

  9. Hi there! I am new to clean eating. Is the white whole wheat flour enriched? I can’t have folic acid and was wondering. Thanks a bunch!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Angela – I really have no idea. I would imagine that would depend on the manufacturer. You would have to contact a few of them and ask. Sorry…

  10. Why does this recipe call for baking soda instead of baking powder? I was always told to use baking powder because the baking soda can cause your food to be too salty.

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Tessica – Because that’s what I had on hand.

  11. What would be a good topping besided syrup?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Dee – Apple sauce, honey, 100% fruit spread, fruit compote, even just plain, chopped fruit would be good!

  12. Made these this morning & I was skeptical of how these would turn out. I am just starting to eat clean & retraining my taste buds & was amazed how easy this receipt was. This will definitely be a keeper, delicious!!!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Celeste – Fantastic! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

  13. hi. what brands or whole wheat flour do you use to have clean flour? I didn’t know any flour could be considered clean so I want to know what brand you use.

  14. I have made many of your recipes love them all. Thank you. I have pastry flour that I used from some of your recipes, and I would like to use it for this recipe. Is It the same 2 cups as the flour for this recipe

  15. Thank you for your quick response. U are the best!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

      Jennie – Awww, thanks! 😀

  16. Is the batter supposed to be really runny?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Ashley – Not super runny, but probably more running than you are used to. If you are worried, you can add a tiny bit more flour. But do a test waffle first to be sure it needs it.

  17. I tired it 3 times and each time the center of the waffle was not cooked

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Ashley – Okay, then you do need to add more flour. How long are you letting them cook? I know if I go by what my waffle maker tells me (when the green light comes on), mine are not cooked either. I let them cook a bit longer.

  18. Going to try these tomorrow. so exited!!
just one question, what measurement do you use to dish out the batter to make it so it makes 9 waffles??

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Taryn – I have a round Belgian waffle maker. With that size maker, the yield is 9 waffles.

  19. Is it possible to use water in place of the milk? Great post I can’t wait to try them!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Hannah – I wouldn’t. I mean, you could try it, but I don’t think it would work very well. But you can always cut the recipe in half.

  20. Do you have a clean version of syrup for the waffles?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Shannon – That just be honey or maple syrup. I have a blueberry sauce, but it’s not a syrup. It’s more like a coulis.
