Can I Really Make Apple Chips In An Air Fryer?

As the title suggests, you sure can! While most folks will make apple chips in a dehydrator for a truly crunchy chip, you can absolutely save time by making them in an air fryer. They won’t have that truly hard crunch of a regular chip, but they’ll get pretty close enough to get the job done.

Best Kind Of Apples For Apple Chips?

You can use whichever apple you have handy. The best apple (and my favorite apples for apple chips or apple fries) is a tart apple, like Granny Smiths. But this will vary by each person’s tastes. If you prefer a truly sweet apple, then use that! Here are some suggestions:

Tart Apples

  • Granny smith
  • Pink lady apples
  • Jonathan
  • Braeburn

Sweet Apples

  • Fuji
  • Gala
  • Ambrosia
  • Sunrise
  • Red apple

Ingredient Checklist For This Apple Chips Recipe

The good news is, this recipe uses only simple ingredients. Ingredients you most likely already have in your kitchen! (Printable recipe card below!)

Plain Apple Chips:

2 medium apples – You’ll be slicing these thin and uniformly. While the best way to slice these apples is a microplane slicer, a sharp knife can get things done as well. Just take your time. It’s important that these are all cut to the same thickness. You are aiming for about an ⅛ inch.

Cinnamon Apple Chips

2 tsp. ground cinnamon (give or take)

Cinnamon Sugar Apple Chips

2 tbsp. ground cinnamon

2 tbsp. granular sweetener

Apple Pie Chips

2 tbsp. apple pie spice – You can make your own in two minutes!

2 tbsp. granular sweetener – I used brown xylitol because it’s what works best for my blood sugar. But for unprocessed sweeteners, try Sucanat, monk fruit, or coconut sugar.

How To Air Fry Apple Chips

Plain Apple Chips

  • Slice apples thin. About an ⅛ inch. You want uniformly thin slices so that these will cook evenly in the air fryer.
  • Place the plain apple slices in a single layer in your air fryer basket.

Cinnamon Apple Chips

  • Lay the apple chips out on the air fryer tray (or basket) and then sprinkle a light layer of ground cinnamon over the top.

Apple Pie Chips

  • Mix ground cinnamon with granular sweetener and then press the apple slices into that mixture before placing them on the air fryer. The added sugar is great for sweet apples or apples that should be sweet but aren’t.

Cook Time

  • Set temperature to 325° F., and air fry for 8 minutes, flipping half way through the cooking process. For crispier chips, continue to air fry in 2-minute intervals, flipping the apples each time. When the slices start to blow around a bit in the air fryer, they are done.
  • Use a cooling rack to let these fully cool and harden.

Air Fryer Apple Chip Texture

Softer Chips – Some folks like their apple chips softer (a bit more like baked apples) with a bit of crisp around the edges of the skin. For this texture, you’ll be cooking these for only the first 8 minutes of cooking time called for.

Crispy Chips – If you prefer a crispier chip, you’ll want to continue to cook these longer and at a lower temperature. However, these can burn VERY quickly in an air fryer. Particularly when you add spices and sweetener. So if you want these crispy, you’ll need to cook for the full 8 minutes (flipping halfway through the cooking process), and then reduce the heat to 325 F. and cook in 1-minute intervals, flipping each time, until you reach a browner, crispier apple.

IMPORTANT: These will feel soft when they are warm and just out of the air fryer. You’ll need to fully cool these on a cooling rack to get the crisp and crunch. If you are aiming for a crispier chip, you’ll need to air fry these until they have almost a “papery” feel to them when they are still warm.

Tips For The Best Apple Chips

  • Watch your chips carefully as they cook.
  • Flip often.
  • Don’t over-stuff or fill your air fryer basket or tray. Air flow is critical in an air fryer.
  • Do not store these at room temperature. They are no dehydrated, which means they still container some moisture which can turn to mold if left on the counter or in a cabinet. If you want to dry store apple chips, you will need to dehydrate them instead of air frying them.

How To Store Apple Chips?

You’ll want to store these in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to a week. Do not store at room temperature.

Can You Freeze Air Fryer Apple Chips?

Yup! These keep well in the fridge! As long as they are in an airtight container, they will keep for up to 3 months.

How To Serve Apple Chips

If you’re wondering what to eat apple chips with, here’s a short list to get you started. Remember, these are a fantastic substitute for corn chips! Most things you eat with corn chips will taste great with apple chips.

  • Salsa
  • Guacamole
  • Taco salad

  • Cut and added to salads
