I don’t bake a lot of apple pies. I never have. But on the rare occasion that I do make one these days, I like to make my own apple pie spice to go in it.
The truth is, this is a very simple mix to make. There’s no added sugar and the flavor and aroma of the pie as it’s baking lets you know the balance of spices is just right. At least for me and my family’s taste buds!
I’m experimenting with a grain free, sugar free apple pie for this Thanksgiving. So we’ll see how it goes. But this spice will be in my holiday pie no matter which version I end up with.
I know some people like ginger in their apple pie spice, but I’m not a fan of that. So if that’s your preference, you can add about an 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. to the mix. But I always feel like that makes it more of a pumpkin pie spice, though not completely. It’s totally up to you!
YOU MIGHT ALSO ENJOY:
- 2 tbsp. ground cinnamon
- 2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 1/2 tsp. cardamom
- 1/2 tsp. allspice
- Blend all the spices together in a spice jar. You can stir or shake, whatever gets the job done. Just be sure they are well blended so you don’t end up with too much of one spice in your pie.
