Peppermint Latte Recipe

This homemade peppermint latte recipe offers a quick and easy way to get this popular taste at home. It’s quick, easy, and festive!

Most coffee shops sell a peppermint mocha latte. But today, we are staying true blue to the peppermint. Or should I say “true green”? Anyway…

A glass mug filled with peppermint latte and topped with whipped cream, crushed candy cane and a whole candy cane for garnish.

What Is A Peppermint Latte?

A latte is typically brewed espresso shots with a lot of milk added. Add some peppermint extract, and you’ve got the flavor without all the sugary syrup.

But you can also make a latte with plain coffee. And since I don’t have espresso or an espresso machine, we’re gonna do this the “trashy way” and use coffee. You, however, can use whatever you like best.

Why Peppermint At Christmas?

While nobody truly knows for sure why peppermint is so heavily associated with Christmas, there is a popular theory.

“It is believed that in 1670, a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral handed this candy out to children at their living Nativity, to keep the kids occupied. The candy was shaped to look like a shepherd’s staff. The peppermint flavor probably wasn’t introduced for another 200 years. They became popular to hang on Christmas trees in the United States.”

Eat Like No One

Can You Make This Keto?

You can! Blend a tablespoon of butter or oil into the coffee along with the peppermint. Whip heavy whipping cream with a keto-friendly sweetener and you’re good to go!

What’s In A Peppermint Latte At Starbucks?

Now before anybody comes after me for the crushed candy canes, I allow this treat for myself once a year during the holidays, and Mini Chef loves them as well. If it doesn’t fit with your eating plan, just skip it! Life is too short to stress out over 2 little pieces of candy. I promise.

About The Ingredients

Brewed coffee – Or espresso. You can use regular or decaf.

Frothed milk – Any type you prefer. Frothing is optional though. If you are non-dairy, almond milk or oat milk work well here. Avoid coconut milk. It doesn’t go well with the mint.

Peppermint extract

Topping Ideas

  • Whipped cream
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Coconut sugar – powdered makes a nice garnish.
