Easy Chocolate Mousse Recipe {Viral TikTok Recipe}

This 3-ingredient recipe for easy chocolate mousse can be prepped in about five minutes. It then chills overnight in the fridge, and you have a soft, decadent, chocolatey goodness you can enjoy the following day.

Dessert has never been this easy. Three ingredients, a blender, and a few hours in the fridge are all you need to make a luscious, silky, fluffy chocolate mousse. If you love chocolate, this is the dessert you’ll want to try.

I found this recipe thanks to TikToker, @Savory Delights. I’m not sure who the original creator is, however. If anybody knows, I’d love to give credit where credit is due. I altered the recipe only slightly by reducing the amount of water to make the mouse a bit thicker and adding vanilla for added flavor.

What If My Mousse Doesn’t Thicken?

In some cases, the mousse may not thicken. When this happens, it’s an easy fix, but it will require another night of chilling. The reason it doesn’t gel is because there wasn’t enough chocolate. That doesn’t mean you didn’t measure properly. It just means that your chocolate chips were most likely larger than mine. When you measure in volume, those things make a difference.

If your mouse doesn’t gel, you’ll need to add another cup of chocolate chips to a blender tumbler and add the unthickened mousse to the blender. Blend it again until you have a smooth liquid, return it to the bowl, and chill overnight again.

Can I Control The Sweetness?

You should taste the liquid before you chill it. If it’s sweet enough, it should be fine. If not (as can be the case with alternative chocolate chips), I highly recommend adding a few drops of stevia. You don’t want to add other liquid sweeteners because they can offset the thickening of the mouse. You can blend in up to a quarter cup of a granular sweetener of your choosing. Good options are Sucanat, coconut sugar, or monk fruit.

What If I Want To Use Unsweetened Chocolate?

If you want to chop up a bar of unsweetened chocolate instead of using chocolate chips, you can do that and blend in granular sweetener. You’ll want to add to taste, and make sure you blend it well. The sweetener has to be fully dissolved into the liquid before you chill it until it’s stiff enough to be mousse.

What Kind Of Chocolate Chips Should I Use?

You can use any chocolate chips you like. Specialty chocolate chips such as vegan chocolate chips, dairy-free, sugar-free, dark chocolate chips, or just regular milk chocolate chips.

Ways To Serve Chocolate Mousse

You can decorate your chocolate mousse any way you like or use it to serve on top of other dessert items. Choose a nice bowl set or a set of nice glasses for individual servings.

  • In champagne glasses with chopped berries.
  • Serve like pudding with layers of whipped cream or some other layering.
  • Spooned on top of brownies or blondies.
  • Served on the side of a slice of cheesecake.
  • With meringue topping.
  • Spooned into a pastry crust.
  • With fudge or melted chocolate drizzled over the top.

Chocolate Mousse Topping Ideas

If you want to garnish your mousse with chocolate shavings, you’ll have to make shavings from a chocolate bar.

  1. Whipped cream
  2. Shaved chocolate curls
  3. Fresh berries – Try strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries.
  4. Mint leaves
  5. Chopped nuts – Try almonds, hazelnuts, or pecans.
  6. Cocoa powder
  7. Chocolate sauce drizzle
  8. Caramel sauce drizzle
  9. Grated orange zest
  10. Toasted coconut flakes
  11. Crushed cookies or biscotti
  12. Edible flowers
  13. Extracts such as peppermint extract.
  14. Sea salt flakes
  15. Espresso powder
  16. Honey or maple syrup drizzle
  17. Candied citrus peel
  18. Sliced bananas
  19. Marshmallows

UPDATE: After some hit-or-miss results for a few people who have tried this, I came to realize that weight is a much more critical measurement for this recipe than volume. Different-sized chips will give you a different amount of chocolate when you measure it by the cup. So, to make this properly, use the following ratio. The recipe below has been updated accordingly from when it was first published.

7 oz. chocolate + 2 cups water

If it still doesn’t thicken the way you’d like, you can blend in more chocolate, as mentioned above. If it doesn’t get thick enough for you, don’t throw it out!

About The Ingredients

Water – Use filtered water. Avoid water that may have a chlorine flavor.

Chocolate chips – Use what you’re comfortable using. I opted for dark chocolate and sugar-free chocolate.

Pure vanilla extract – Use the real stuff, not vanilla flavoring.
