Cajun Seasoning Recipe

This Cajun seasoning recipe is a great replacement for the store-bought stuff and a great way to add some southern flare to your home cooking!

The truth is, manufacturers add all kinds of weird and unnecessary ingredients to the foods they sell. Store-bought spice mixes are not exempt from this. In fact, I’ve seen sugar, preservatives, aspartame and all kinds of unwanted ingredients added to spice mixes I’ve found on store shelves. Ingredients I don’t want to consume and that I find completely unnecessary.

They only add sugar to make you crave their product more so they make more money. And those other additives may make their product last longer on the store shelf, but that doesn’t mean I want to put it in my body.

I do my best to avoid sugar, and I don’t want to use something that has been on a store shelf for months, just because it can be. I like my food a little fresher than that. Even if they are dried spices. Maybe that makes me a food snob, but my health has been better for it. So I stick with it.

WHAT IS IN CAJUN SEASONING?

Cajun seasoning is a blend of spices that are popularly used for meats, roasted vegetables and they even go particularly well in creamy sauces (see my diary free, cashew  alfredo sauce recipe. This would be great in that!).

WHERE IS CAJUN SEASONING FROM?

As the name hints, it originates in Louisiana. Cajuns use many herbs and spices in their cooking and many people have their own secret blends that they guard with their lives and take to their graves. Cajun seasoning can be a serious business, but when you consider how good Cajun food can be, it’s really no surprise either. The unique cooking techniques and foods that come from this region inspire good, southern cooking and the spices that go into it.

Now I don’t claim to be a true southerner. I’m a born and raised California girl. My southern status is a recent one and I only managed to pass through New Orleans on my way to North Carolina. So if you are from Louisiana, I hope my recipe doesn’t offend in some way. I know you guys are serious about your spices. (And well you should be!) Cajun food is fabulous!

An easy cajun spice mix you can make at home in minutes.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup paprika
  • ¼ cup garlic granules
  • 1 ½ tbsp. ground black pepper
  • 1 ½ tbsp. onion granules
  • 1 ½ tbsp. dried oregano
  • 1 ½ tbsp. dried thyme
  • 2 tsp. cayenne pepper (or more if you want more kick. This is mild)
  • 2 tsp. pink Himalayan salt

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl or food-safe storage container with a lid.
    Individual spices sit next to each other in a bowl, just prior to mixing.
  • Mix or shake well to combine.
    Mixed Cajun Seasoning sits in a bowl after just being whisked together.
