Graham Cracker Recipe

Making homemade graham crackers is easy, and this homemade, gluten-free graham cracker recipe proves it. In fact, this particular recipe is even easy to convert for keto and low-carb eaters while still being totally enjoyable for those who thrive on carbs.

I know. It’s so easy to just pick up a box of graham crackers at the store. At some health food stores, you can even get crackers that use only clean ingredients. But if you’re like me and have dietary restrictions, it suddenly becomes much more important to make things like this from scratch. Thankfully, it’s not difficult or complicated. This is an easy recipe, and the crackers can be used just like regular graham crackers.

What Are Graham Crackers?

Graham crackers are mildly sweet crackers that are made with graham flour and, usually, honey for extra flavoring. They are a popular kid’s snack and are often made into graham cracker crust for desserts and cheesecakes.

They were originally created by a preacher named Sylvester Graham in the 1800s. They were not originally sweet at all and were, in fact, pretty bland stuff. Graham believed that in order to live healthfully and by God’s will, people needed to eat bland and uninspiring food. The idea was to make sure people were not getting excited in any way due to flavorful food. The crackers were first made by him, and therefore named after him.

These days, graham crackers are quite sweet and are treated like desserts or sweet snacks. They are used for making s’mores and other much sweeter desserts. They crumble easily, making them excellent choices for pressed crusts.

Gluten-Free Graham Crackers

I do everything in my power to avoid eating wheat these days—at least until I move to Spain, where I’m pretty sure the wheat won’t tear up my tummy. So, for the time being, I have recipes like this that don’t use wheat at all. But thanks to the almond flour, the texture of these crackers remains as it should because graham flour is a coarser flour anyway. So almond flour is a great substitute texture-wise.

Can I Adjust The Sweetness Level Of My Homemade Graham Crackers?

You can, but not by much. The recipe calls for a third of a cup. You could probably get away with a half cup, but no more. The reverse is true as well. If you want them less sweet, I wouldn’t go any less than a quarter of a cup.

Dietary Considerations

Vegan – You can use plant-based butter and a plant-based egg replacement.

Vegetarian – This recipe is naturally vegetarian.

Keto – While keto sweeteners are highly processed, it’s an option if your priority is ketosis or blood sugar control. As long as it’s a brown sweetener and granular, you can use anything you are comfortable using.

Sugar-Free – Much like the Keto options, your choices are to use a sugar-free, brown, granular sweetener.

Dairy-Free – Use a plant-based butter instead of regular butter.

Gluten-Free – This recipe is already naturally gluten-free. Just be sure your individual ingredients are labeled that way.

Egg-Free – Vegan egg replacements are a good option. In a pinch, try using one to two tablespoons of chia seeds.

Flavoring Ideas For Homemade Graham Crackers

You can flavor these graham crackers any way you wish when you make them at home. Try adding vanilla extract, nutmeg, or even a touch of cocoa powder for a chocolatey option. You can also use extracts such as orange or lemon extract as well as some freshly grated zest.

How To Use Homemade Graham Crackers Beyond Snacking Or Pie Crusts?

  1. Make graham cracker sandwiches with peanut butter or Nutella and some homemade marshmallows.
  2. Crush them up and use them as a topping for yogurt or ice cream.
  3. Dip them in melted chocolate for homemade chocolate-covered graham crackers.
  4. Use them as a base for no-bake desserts like layered pudding or mousse cups.
  5. Break them into small pieces and incorporate them into homemade granola or trail mix.
  6. Use them as a crunchy layer in trifles or parfaits.
  7. Crumble them up and use them as a crust for cheesecake bars or fruit crisps.
  8. Get creative with s’mores variations by using homemade graham crackers with different types of chocolate and flavored marshmallows.

Ingredients For Graham Crackers

Almond flour – This is blanched almond flour, not almond meal. You don’t want the skins on the almonds when they are ground. Most almond flour is also more finely ground than almond meal, making it more appropriate to use as a flour substitute.

Granular sweetener – Here is where your options come in. If you are keto, use a keto-friendly brown sweetener. If you aren’t, use an unprocessed sweetener such as Sucanat, coconut sugar, or monk fruit. As long as it’s brown granular sweetener, it should work well here.

Egg – Room temperature eggs work best here.

Butter – Unsalted butter works best here. You also want it to be at room temperature.

Salt – Whatever you normally bake or cook with is fine here.

Baking soda – This is soda, not baking powder. Don’t confuse the two.

Ground flaxseed – These are best freshly ground, but store-bought will work, too.

Ground cinnamon – Don’t use cinnamon sugar. Just plain cinnamon.
