About Chai Spice Recipe Ingredients

Chai is pretty simple to make using ingredients in your spice cabinet. All you have to do is mix ground cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, black pepper and nutmeg, which is optional, and you have a great chai spice mix that you can use for pretty much anything.

Recipe Tip

  1. I don’t care for tea that is spicy in the heat sense. So I kept the ground black pepper to a minimum. However, if you like more spice, feel free to use as much as you like. A full teaspoon is probably plenty, but you can certainly add more than that if you wish.
  2. If your goal is to make tea, you’ll want to use the measurements for whole spices that are to the right of the ingredients in the recipe card below.
  3. Use whole spices for tea, and ground spices for everything else.
  4. If you don’t have cardamom, you can substitute with a little more cinnamon or ginger, though the flavor profile will be slightly different.

How To Make Chai Spice Mix

  1. Mix all the spices in a small bowl to get them well blended.
  2. Transfer them to a storage jar for storage.

How To Make Chai Tea

  1. Bring 1½ cups of water with 1 tbsp. of the spice mix to a gentle boil and cook for about 10 minutes.
  2. Add 1-2 tsp. of black tea leaves (or 1 tea bag) and a ½ cup of milk (any type you prefer).
  3. Reduce heat to simmer for about 3-5 more minutes, strain off the spices, and sweeten your tea to your liking.

How To Store Chai Spice Mix

Store any type of Chai spice mix in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. It will stay fresh for up to 6 months. Basically, store it like you would any other spices in your kitchen. If you want it to last up to a year, you can freeze this, however, you have to make sure it is absolutely airtight so your spices don’t take on moisture and get moldy.
