What Is Salisbury Steak?

If you like meatloaf at all, you’ll love Salisbury steak. It’s like meatloaf but with mushroom gravy and more flavor overall. It’s an American comfort food that is made with ground meat (usually beef, but can be made with other meats as well). You form it into patties and serve it with a brown mushroom gravy and any base (such as mashed potatoes) that you prefer.

Dr. James Salisbury was the original inventor in the 19th century. But the recipe didn’t start out as we know it today. It has evolved into today’s version over years and is now a well-known American favorite.

  • Neutral Flavor: Turkey absorbs the rich flavors of the Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and mushrooms beautifully.
  • Versatile Option: It’s perfect for those who prefer lighter, healthier options or are reducing their red meat intake.

Pro Recipe Tips

  1. Chill the Patties – After forming the patties, refrigerate them for 15-20 minutes to help them hold their shape better while cooking.
  2. Don’t Skip the Browning – Searing the patties first adds a rich depth of flavor that enhances the dish.
  3. Low and Slow for the Gravy – After adding the beef broth, cook the sauce on low heat to let it thicken gradually without lumps.
  4. Taste as You Go – Adjust salt and seasoning in the gravy before adding the patties back in.
