If you like skewers for appetizers or snacks, you have to try these Mediterranean Skewers. They have all the deliciousness of the Italian Caprese version but with more Mediterranean flair.

Now that I’m an empty nester, I’ve become really big on “girl dinners.” Those simple meals that us chickadees love to toss together when we have nobody else to cook for. Something simple and basic that hits the spot every time.

What Are Mediterranean Skewers?

As you can see in the image, skewers are simply toothpicks or longer skewers with layers of fresh ingredients that you can serve as appetizers or snacks. They even make a great side dish.

I recently did a recipe for Caprese Skewers and had to do this version as well. I love those Mediterranean flavors that include the tang of feta cheese and Kalamata olives. There’s just something about it that is delicious every single time.

What To Serve With Mediterranean Skewers

If you want these to be part of a larger meal, try serving them with any of the following:

Can I Make These Ahead?

Yes, you can. But it’s best to wait until just before serving them to add the glaze, oil, salt, and pepper.

The Cheese

Feta cheese comes in several different “flavors”, based on what milk, or combination of milk, is used to make them.

Mild flavor – The mildest flavor is feta made with cow milk.

Medium tang – A good medium tang is a combination of goat and sheep milk.

Strong tang – The strongest flavored feta is created with either goat or sheep milk.

About The Ingredients

Grape tomatoes – You can also use cherry tomatoes or any other variety of small tomatoes.

Feta cheese – Buy it in a block and cut it to size. Just make sure the squares of cheese are big enough to withstand being skewered.

Kalamata olives – Pitted and drained.

Fresh basil leaves – You can also try fresh mint leaves.

Balsamic glaze – The store-bought stuff is full of unwanted ingredients. It’s best to make your own balsamic glaze at home.

Salt and pepper – Sprinkle on as much or as little as you like.

Storage

Store any leftovers in an airtight container. It’s best to remove the basil leaves for storage because they will spoil quickly. They will last in the fridge for up to three or four days.

Freezing

Freezing is not recommended for this recipe.
