Baked Sweet Potato Chips Recipe

These sweet potato chips make for a delicious, healthy snack, especially when you’re craving deep-fried chips!

I’ve heard it a lot. People start eating clean and they miss their potato chips. I mean, ya… they’re good, but they are definitely not good for you.

So I thought I’d take a crack at making some clean eating sweet potato chips.

Due to the higher fat content, you will want to enjoy the chips in moderation. But, at least you can have some if you “really gotta have some”. Am I right?

HEALTH BENEFITS OF SWEET POTATOES

Sweet potatoes have a lot of healthy nutrients, so you can feel good about eating them.
They are high in fiber (always a good thing!). They have lots of vitamin C and potassium as well as vitamin B and magnesium. And let’s not forget that beautiful orange color (although they come in different colors!) which means they are also high in beta-carotene! Good for your eyesight!

IS IT GOOD TO EAT A SWEET POTATO EVERY DAY?

If you love them, then absolutely! While I’m a huge advocate for getting your nutrients from a well rounded variety of fruits and veggies, there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating a sweet potato every day. Enjoy!

WHICH IS HEALTHIER? A SWEET POTATO OR A WHITE POTATO?

Regular, white potatoes have less fat and calories than sweet potatoes. However, sweet potatoes have fewer carbs and more fiber. Anyone with blood sugar issues will most likely tell you that they do much better with sweet potatoes than with white potatoes. They also have more nutrients than white potatoes. So bite-for-bite, sweet potatoes have more nutrition, making them the better and healthier choice.

SHOULD YOU EAT SWEET POTATOES BEFORE OR AFTER A WORKOUT?

Sweet potatoes as well as the homemade sweet potato chips, can be enjoyed either before or after a workout. If you eat them before a workout, the carbs will help fuel your workout. And if you eat them after a workout, it will help refuel your muscles and energy levels. So either way, it’s a win-win!

ARE SWEET POTATOES GOOD FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

Sweet potatoes can absolutely be a part of your weight loss plan! They are full of fiber, which keeps you full, and they give you tons of great nutrition. The trick is to watch what you top them with. Make sure it’s healthy and low in fat and you’ll be good to go!

HOW THICK SHOULD SWEET POTATO CHIPS BE?

Regular potato chips are cut very thinly. If you like crispy potato wedges, you can cut the sweet potato chips into thicker slices.

NOTES:

I will say that it is really important to use some sort of slicing device that will cut the sweet potato chips into a uniform thickness. This ensures that the sweet potato chips will bake evenly. Something like a mandolin or old fashioned cheese slicer (I used my SaladMaster) works well. It also makes the job a lot faster. With a slicing device, you can do all the prep work in about 5 to 10 minutes.

Baked Sweet Potato Chips Recipe

These delicious, twice-baked sweet potato chips make a fabulous snack for special occasions or just because!

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and sliced evenly
  • ¼ cup olive oil (or other light flavored oil)
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • salt to taste after baking

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a large food-safe plastic bag, close off and shake or mush everything together to get the potato slices evenly coated in the oil and cheese.
  • Spread out in a single layer on un-oiled cookie sheets.
  • Bake at 350 F. for 20 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool while you cool your oven down to 200 F.
  • Return the chips to the oven and bake for 2 hours.
  • Cool, salt and enjoy!

  2. How do you get the lines on your chips? I’m using a mandolin and they come out smooth. I would like them to have some texture like yours.

      Amanda – If your mandolin came with blades, a waffled blade should be one of them. If not, you can try to track down and old fashioned cheese cutter. But your best bet is the blade on your mandolin. Flat chips work too though!

  3. Am I reading this correctly, 41 grams of fat?
    Seems very high, almost the total amount of daily recommended fat intake?
    Would they bake up as crispy using less oil?

      Judith – I have no way of knowing if that’s an exact number or not. My data is not exact. It’s a ballpark figure. But you could try to do this with less fat, yes, I just don’t know if the texture will be the same or not I haven’t tried it.
