Onion Soup Mix Recipe

I love this onion soup mix recipe. It goes with everything. But I’m curious. Does anybody actually ever make onion soup with onion soup mix? Or is it one of those items that just carries the name because of the main ingredient?

I suppose you could add it to french onion soup, although I don’t think that would be quite the same with all those little bits of onion floating around instead of the bigger pieces. But who am I to judge.

The fact is, this stuff adds tons of flavor to just about anything you cook. And the great part is, there is no MSG, preservatives, added sugars or any of that other garbage that food companies like to add to their packaged seasonings. Just real herbs and spices, the way it’s supposed to be!

Clean Eating Onion Soup Mix Recipe

I actually tested this out first by mixing it into some plain Greek yogurt to see if I could get a vegetable dip that was in any way close to the one my mom used to make. And as a matter of fact, this was pretty dead on! Sorry Mom, I figured out your secret recipe! Then I mixed it in with some ground turkey for turkey burgers. Delish!! This just has so many uses. How do you typically use onion soup mix? What types of dishes do you add it to?

ONION SOUP MIX RECIPE FOR MEATLOAF

Yes, this is a perfect replacement of the packaged stuff for making meatloaf! 1 packet typically has about 2 tbsp. of onion soup mix in it, but also contains a lot of MSG which intensifies the flavor. So for meatloaf, I recommend using 3-4 tablespoons per 2 lbs. of  meat.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup dried, chopped onions
  • 2 tbsp. dried parsley
  • 5 tbsp. onion powder
  • 2 tsp. celery seed
  • 1 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp. turmeric
  • 2 tsp. sea salt or pink salt
  • 2 tsp. garlic powder

Instructions

  • Blend all herbs and spices together. I find it's easiest to pour everything into a ziplock bag or glass jar. Easy to mix, easy to store!
  • Note that you can use less salt if you need to. As I said above, I seasoned this by mixing it in with yogurt for dip, and that amount of salt tasted good to me. So adjust that to your liking.

  1. Will have to try this. Looks good! One of my fave delis makes a chicken salad and they put pineapple pieces (tiny) and nuts in theirs. It’s so good. Gotta figure out how to do that one too. 🙂

I love this mix I have been using it for a lot of things! Do you also have a suggestion for a clean version of those ranch mix packets? Just wondering cause they could both make great dips for the upcoming superbowl! Plus I have a recipe for some crockpot ranch chicken but I want to make it clean… Please let me know!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Jessica W – I have a recipe for ranch dressing, but not for a ranch mix. I’ll have to work on that.

  3. I love that I found this recipe! thanks! 🙂 I use a packet for when I make roast, so how much of this should I use if I normally use 1 packet?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Chelsey – About 1 tbps., but you may have to eyeball it a bit.

  4. How do you dry onion. I can’t buy it where I live?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Elin – For this recipe, I recommend buying online if you can’t get it locally. Drying or dehydrating your own won’t be the same. But if you want to try it, I recommend chopping them and using a dehydrator.

  5. What an awesome find! I am so excited to see you posted this recipe; I sent you a question yesterday asking if there was a clean onion soup mix to use when recipes call for it.

Do you also have a clean recipe or substitute to use when a recipe calls for for a can of cream soup (of mushroom, celery, chicken etc.)

    Thanks so much!

Marjorie – yes, I have a cream of mushroom soup recipe that you can use with chicken or celery as well depending on what soup you need.

I am cooking a roast today 4/14/14 and really need to know asap =) thank you have and have a great day.

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Loreen – I’m lost. 4c?? What’s that? If a package is expired, I recommend throwing it out.

  7. I’ll definitely be trying this out! I make Pot Roast with Onion Soup mix! Just toss it on top with some water and let it cook at a low temp all day!

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Angela – Awesome! Let me know how it turns out!

  8. Question- what if we don’t have dry onion? Can we use fresh onion??

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Ashley – No. You can certainly add fresh onion to whatever you are cooking, but you can’t put fresh onion in a jar with the dried herbs.

  9. We love Onion dip at our house, so now I have a new way of making it… Thank you so much!

I’ve been looking for a good onion soup recipe mix to add to my slow cooked roasts. This one works great – just as well as the Lipton packets!! I use 2 Tablespoons per roast, and omit the turmeric because it lends a yellow/orange color to the meat juices.

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

      B. King – Excellent!! So happy you’re enjoying it! 😀

  12. I love using the onion mushroom soup mix for my beef roast in the crockpot. Would this work with mushrooms added to the mix? dried or not?

This is far better than the packaged stuff as most are when homemade. You know what is in it! I used 1/4 cup dried onion and 1/4 cup roasted dry onions…Delish! Thank you for sharing! This will make a great Christmas present also with a few homemade mixes for those who love to cook and keep it healthy!
