Chocolate Milkshake Recipe

This chocolate milkshake is everything you want in a milkshake, and none of the stuff you don’t!

One of the things I’ve always loved is a good milkshake. Smooth, creamy and with the addition of chocolate, oh so delightful. In fact, a good milkshake can turn any day into near perfection. Don’t you think?

A reader named Annie sent this recipe to me. I’m so happy she did! I mean, who doesn’t like a shake?

Thank you, thank you Annie for sharing this with me and allowing me to share it with everyone here!! This is way better than any shake you could buy, and so much healthier!

HOW TO MAKE A CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE WITHOUT ICE CREAM

You do not need ice cream to make a chocolate milkshake! This can either be good news, or bad, depending on who you ask. But the process is actually quite simple as you will see in the recipe below. It’s actually just like making a smoothie! So get out your blender and you’ll be enjoying this deliciousness in literally minutes! Can you even stand it??!

WHEN IS NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE DAY?

Yep, you read that right! There is actually a national chocolate milkshake day!! Who knew??!!?
This blessed day falls on September 12th each year. I’m not entirely sure of the significance of that date or even if there really is any significance beyond food manufacturers wanting to encourage your consumption of this beverage. But I figure, if they are going to make a national day out of it, I might as well show “big brother” a little spite and make it better and cheaper at home!

  10. I’ve had frozen bananas in the freezer for ages. I used to make banana cake or banana bread. I remembered your making chocolate ice cream with frozen bananas so I asked the kidlets if they would like a choolate smoothy. Yes yes.
We have chocolate and nut allergies at our house so I put about a cup of frozen bananas, a couple of spoonfuls of carob powder and unsweetened Silk in the blender. I wasn’t sure how sweet it was so I gave a spoonful to our resident sweet-tooth and asked if it was good or did it need to be sweeter. He loved it. (Carob is not as bitter as cocoa, so no sweetener needed at all. We all liked it so much I made it twice. I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t taste banana-y at all. It was just like a thick chocolate shake. I’m thinking maybe a little coffee extract next time. I think that would be perfect next time I have a really bad craving for a Jamocha shake!

Does this taste like it has bananas in it? I’m thinking of making it tomorrow. I don’t like the flavor of bananas, but I do have some. I’m trying to find ways to sneak in some more fruits/veggies. I figure hiding the taste of bananas could be easy.

    1. Anonymous says:

Lisa – The chocolate covers most of the flavor.

      1. LisasLosingIt.net says:

Thanks! Will see how it tastes in the morning.

LLI – Please let me know how it turns out!

I made this for my breakfast this morning. The banana taste is a bit strong, so I tried adding an extra tbsp of unsweetened cocoa and I helped a little bit. I think this would be good with avocado. The ones I have in the fridge aren’t ripe yet else I would have thrown one in.

            1. Anonymous says:

LLI – Avocado sounds good!! Let me know if you try it, I’ve never used it that way.

  12. Love this recipe! I make this in my vitamix and it makes it incredibly smooth and creamy.

  13. graciouspantry says:

I would work, but it would have a different flavor and it most likely wouldn’t be clean.

  14. Victoria McDonald says:

I made this today..but I added a twist..instead of the honey I added a few cherries, can you say banana split…lol yummy

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

      Fantastic! 🙂

  15. Divine! I doubled the banana because I was out of yogurt, added a tiny touch of cold black coffee and vanilla extract and my husband STOLE it! Thankfully I had enough for more. It stopped a chocolate craving it it’s tracks.

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

What a stinker! Glad you had reserves! LOL

  16. Can stevia be used in place of honey?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Monday – Sure. You could sub with any sweetener.

  17. Bill Flowers says:

I keep reading these great smoothie recipes and am usually disappointed that I can’t drink them; so many of them call for banana as an ingredient but I’m allergic to bananas. Can you suggest anything I could substitute to get the texture and sweetness that bananas while still using clean ingredients?

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Bill Flowers – I have never tried it myself, but I’ve heard from several people that mango makes an excellent sub for bananas. Particularly if you buy frozen mango. Hope that helps!

  18. Bill Flowers says:

Thank you for the suggestion. Luckily I really like mango! Of course, if I wanted to use it as a substitute in a Mango-Banana smoothie it wouldn’t be quite the same.

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Bill Flowers – True. But if you did go that route, you’d have a delicious mango smoothie instead! Smoothies are great that way. Very versatile! 😀

  19. I really liked this recipe but I was wondering with what can I replace the dairy because my body doesn’t take them very well, maybe almond milk with some nut butter? I would really appreciate if you could give me some ideas, I really love chocolate and I get serious cravings in the afternoon while I’m at work! Thanks

    1. The Gracious Pantry says:

Laura – I think your best bet is almond milk. It won’t be as thick and creamy, but the flavor will be close.
