What You Give Up To Eat Clean

Clean Eating

I was recently talking to a friend about clean eating. She seemed interested, and I was excited that she might actually be considering joining me in my clean eating efforts. But then she asked me a question…

What do I have to give up?”

Well that certainly got my wheels turning. I’ve been doing this long enough now, that I no longer think in those terms. I no longer think about things I have to “give up”, simply because I don’t feel like I’ve really given anything up! So her question really made me pause.

I thought back to when I was just getting started, and I did remember having thoughts of all the things I would no longer be able to have as a clean eater. All that lovely, tasty junk food that had become such a normal part of my every day existence.

So here’s an honest look at what you’ll be giving up if you start eating clean, and why you should give it up forever.

  • Soda
“According to the National Soft Drink Association (NSDA), consumption of soft drinks is now over 600 12-ounce servings (12 oz.) per person per year. Since the late 1970`s, soft drink consumption in the United States has doubled for females and tripled for males. The highest consumption is by males between the ages of 12 – 29; they average 1/2 gallon a day or 160 gallons a year.” (Source

While there aren’t any studies that directly link soda to cancer and diabetes (convenient, isn’t it?), some studies have come very close to proving just that. It’s nothing but chemicals folks. There isn’t a single, real ingredient in there. Any wonder we get sick from drinking it?

  • 3 meals per day
Except instead of eating less frequently like most dieters do, you get to eat more often!! 5-6 times per day! And you thought snacking was bad….
  • Processed foods
As hard as it may seem now at the beginning, I promise you that one day you will look back at your old diet and realize just how gross all that chemically laden, laboratory created, definitely-not-natural food is. Sadly, our western diet is infiltrating the entire world. Countries that have never been fat are suddenly fighting the same obesity epidemic we are. Doesn’t that tell you something?
  • Excess amounts of sugar
While sugar itself has not yet been scientifically linked directly to diabetes, it doesn’t take much intelligence to connect them. We get vast amounts of sugars in the vast amounts of processed foods we eat. This equals vast amounts of empty calories in our daily diets. Calories that enter our body, but do not give it any nutrients whatsoever. These get stored as fat. Fat HAS been directly linked to diabetes. So how they have not yet connected sugar and diabetes is beyond me. But I think many people these days know better anyway, even if they don’t act on that knowledge. Am I wrong?
  • Fast food
I’ve got news for you folks, those burgers are lab-engineered to addict you! Companies specifically use chemical ingredients that will make you crave more and more of these foods. Hard though it may be to walk away, I swear you WILL actually love being free of your cravings for fast food. Being free of that addiction is a beautiful thing. It takes time, but your body will excrete those addicting substances, and you’ll feel better than ever.
  • Deli meats
I hate to tell you this, but processed meats have been directly and scientifically linked to colon cancer. Go for the real thing! Just imagine a fabulous sandwich with slices of REAL turkey, healthy condiments that actually taste good, and bread that will actually keep you full beyond your next 10 minute break!
  • Artificial sweeteners
Folks, there’s just no way around it. These are bad, bad, bad. In fact, it’s almost better to eat the real thing! Your best bet? Take the No Sugar Challenge and get the sweet stuff out of your diet all together. It’s a life changing experience!

That said, I know there is a lot of science that says that these sweeteners are completely safe. But they said Saccharine was safe, and look what came of that! Really, just stay away from the stuff. It’s just not natural!!

  • TV dinners
I don’t care how “healthy” the box says they are, these “meals” are anything but. READ THE INGREDIENT LIST!!! Do you recognize even half of the ingredients? Would you buy any of them individually to cook with in your own kitchen? I’m guessing the answer is “no” for the majority of that list. Please give your body a break and spare it from these unpronounceable lab experiments!
  • <Insert your favorite junk food here>
There are a ton of other foods out there that I could list here. Everything from Oreo’s to Cheez It’s are going to be off your eating plan from here on forward. But if you really take a look at the above list, what are you really giving up? It’s certainly not real food. It’s certainly not nutritious food. It’s certainly not anything that will ever contribute to your health. So are you really giving anything up?

I’ll tell you what though, you’re gaining sooooo much! The foods you’ll be eating are not only delicious, but will make you feel better then you’ve felt in a very long time.

Our bodies run, 100% off the nutrients we feed them. So it makes logical sense that if you actually give your body some real nutrients, your body will function at it’s best. That means your weight will normalize, your skin will look great, you’ll wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and ready to face the day, and above all, you won’t even think about all that junk food much less crave it.

Yep, clean eating is Big Industry’s worst nightmare. But it think it’s about time we give them some of their own medicine. Don’t you?

Here are some other things that you “give up” when you eat clean, or at least I did. I gave up night sweats, hot flashes, headaches, cravings, poor digestion (have never been so regular!!), loss of sleep, dull skin, mood swings from blood sugar swings, lack of energy and that is just to name a few!!!

  • Stephanie

I am certainly far from the perfect clean eater but I do know this – when I fall away from my clean eating life style – I feel crappy – enough said!!! I truly don’t miss the ‘what must I give up’ items there are so many natural healthy items to replace them……and they taste delicious!!!!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Bonnie – Fantastic!! What wonderful things to leave behind!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Stephanie – that’s fabulous! Good for you!

  • Brandy

I agree with Stephanie. I’ve been eating clean for four months. Two weeks ago my husband and I went to New Orleans and I decided that I could get out of cleaning eating for just a week so I could have the delicious Louisiana food. After all, who would deprive theirself of real cajun cooking? I’ve been home for just over a week now and am FINALLY just starting to feel better. Going back to non-clean food did nothing but make me lose energy, feel moody, and have a very sour and bloated tummy. I learned my lesson.

  • Court

I have been eating clean for a little over a year, and just had my wisdom teeth out, and fell off the clean wagon for a mere week, and my body hates me! Who knew pudding cups and jello could make you feel this awful? I’m having such a hard time eating un-clean, because all I want are those carrot sticks and celery my husband is munching on! I never thought that I would actually crave veggies instead of junk, but now that I have been clean, my body knows how great it can feel, and doesn’t want the junk that slows it down! Tiffany, your blog has helped me immensely when I run out of ideas or need that treat once in a while, it’s nice to know I can turn somewhere to get a healthy alternative! Thanks for all you do!

I’d have to agree with other commenters about giving up the “side effects” like PMS (for me).

when I eat better I FEEL BETTER…great motivation to ditch the crap, no?

for me the biggest issue is convenience. Some nights are crazy and if I am prepared all is good. And when I am not…..well…
    :)

Great post! We truly do feel our best when we have the right fuel. I will be hosting several “Clean Eating Dinner Parties” for my friends that are interested in clean eating, but think I only eat leaves and grass. :) Your recipes are going to be enjoyed at every party! Thank you for spending so much time sharing!!

Brandy – Yep! I think once our systems get rid of the crud, reintroducing it does NOT go over very well. Just goes to show you how poisoned the general public really is! Pretty amazing we manage to stay as healthy as we do!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Court – Good for you!!! It’s wonderful that you are craving nutritious, healthy foods. Good for you!!!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Cindy – I agree. Preparation is key with clean eating. There’s just no way around it.

  • Jodi

I’m doing an experiment and have given up dairy (and grains) for 3 weeks. I seriously miss my yogurt and cottage cheese. Any clues where I can get *plain* soy yogurt? I have not seen it in stores, only the flavored ones. Do I have to make it myself? It’s been decades since I made my own yogurt (with scalded raw milkI guess it could be done. I also don’t know where to get dairy free yogurt culture.

  • Christy

I gave up heart palpitations. I experienced them almost daily for 15 years, and they were gone within 2 weeks of eliminating msg and aspartame from my diet 6 months ago.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Heather – That is sooooo awesome! I really need to do that for my friends as well. Good for you! Enjoy!

  • Heather

I give up gas and stomach pain by eating clean. I don’t feel like I am really depriving myself of anything, and I have opened myself up to so many food items I had never tried before deciding to eat clean. I love having so much color in my diet!

    Loved the post!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Jodi – Ya, your guess would be as good as mine on that one. Sorry. I don’t believe there is a plain soy yogurt. I haven’t seen it either. Good luck with your experiment though! The learning process can be tough, but so worth it in the end!

Christy – that’s amazing! Good for you! It makes SUCH a difference!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Heather – Thanks! Isn’t it amazing how the body can heal itself with just a change in diet? It’s wonderful!

  • http://anothersuburbanmom.blogspot.com Another Suburban Mom

I started the 17 Day Diet this week and I am eating super super clean. I have to admit that once I got past the 1st day or two my energy level is good, and I only get strong food cravings when I am hungry.

I just need to find a way to make Buffalo Chicken clean so I can have some with some sauteed kale.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

ASM – I don’t know what the 17 day diet is, but it’s great that you’re eating clean! If you are referring to buffalo sauce (like the kind they put on wings), I have that on my blog under the “Dude Food” category.

  • Marlene

Here’s what I’ve given up so far: 18 lbs of blubber!! And already I’m feeling so much better!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Marlene – Go girl!! That’s awesome!!

  • http://cleanteenkelsey.com Kelsey @ Clean Teen Kelsey

You do give up a lot to eat clean, but the benefits are sooo worth it!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Kelsey – You are so right. I think you get more back than you actually give up.

  • The Herb’n Housewife

I’m trying to follow clean eating and am achieving that goal about 85% of the time. I am feeling better already. I love your site! I can’t wait to share this site with my blog readers and I can’t wait to try the pumpkin smoothie!

  • http://www.theherbnhousewife.blogspot.com The Herb’n Housewife

I like your site very much and know the readers of my blog will too, so I’m hoping you don’t mind if I link to your site. I think it’s great to have so many clean eating recipes close at hand and am anxious to try many of them!

  • Anonymous

THH – 85% is a great percentage!! It’s unreasonable to expect to be 100% perfect. I shoot for about 90% and so far, it’s working pretty well. Let me know what you think of the pumpkin smoothie!!

  • Anonymous

THH – I don’t mind at all! Thanks!

  • http://www.rachealthcomplex.com/ Al Fitness

There’s something messed up with the layout.. A quarter of the article is missing

  • Anonymous

Al – Looks okay on my end. What browser are you using? Is it the latest version?

  • Anonymous

Jenny – Couldn’t have said it better myself!

  • Anonymous

Missgreeneyes – If you can send me a link to the ingredients online, I can take a look for you. Bread is a “case-by-case-basis” kind of thing.

  • graciouspantry

Sarah – Just worry about you. While it’s always nice to have the support of parents, the only person you can worry about is you. Just focus on eating right and setting a good example. You’ll do great!

  • graciouspantry

Traclyn – so true! keep dusting yourself off and you’ll get there eventually!!

  • graciouspantry

MImartinez – Doesn’t that feel great? I love it too!

  • http://twitter.com/SDBrnCACherry Cheryl Scarpelli

I’m getting ready to start eating clean and what comes to my mind w/giving up to eat clean is… the smelly gas caused by my poor food choices, the heartburn caused by the same, sluggishness due to same, and more… yeah, i don’t eat the greatest.

  • graciouspantry

Cheryl – Been there, done that. It does get better with healthy eating!

  • Lisa@thedailyrundown

I’m a clean eater and my mother in law is here from Israel. In her town they do not have fast food but she sees the commercials on tv. She throws away the food I cook and will only eat fast food. It’s so frustrating and she doesn’t have a concept of what junk food is. My 4 year old turned down a donut she tried to give him!

  • graciouspantry

Lisa – Wow! Congrats on the choice your 4 year old made! Says a lot about how well you’ve done with him! Something like that can be very frustrating. But all you can do is keep trying to explain.

  • Wendy B J

    What about stevia?

  • graciouspantry

Wendy – Unless it’s green, it’s not clean.

  • graciouspantry

    Thanks!

  • Asthkjk@yahoo.com

Stevia comes from natural green plant. Its an herb. And green.

  • Kim Lewis2889

Thanks for the reminder of what I started 4 weeks ago. I’ve read your blog over and over these past weeks and know that is the lifestyle I want. I have gone about it slowly, to not feel deprived. I haven’t had or wanted fastfood, candy (jelly bellys, chewy sprees, skittles), white flour…I have taken my time with diet coke and coconut creamor in my coffee. I am proud to say that I did not have a d. coke yesterday and went to bed realizing I didn’t have a craving for one. I count that as a huge milestone. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to getting this information out to all of us.

  • graciouspantry

Kim – Thank you so much! That is so awesome!!! Getting over the diet coke addiction is not an easy thing (and that’s no accident!). You should be very proud of yourself!

  • graciouspantry

    Asthkjk – Yup!

  • graciouspantry

Cristye – I’m happy it helped!
