How To Get Your Oats When You Travel

Tired of restaurant oatmeal when you travel?

If you’re used to eating oats at home, restaurant oats rarely measure up (I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it IS really rare). A while back, I was chatting it up on Facebook and a fan gave me the GREATEST tip. I just HAD to share it with you! I can’t believe I never thought of it before. It’s so simple!

What’s this fantastic tip?

Travel Oatmeal

Place 1/2 cup quick oats (3-5 minute oats) in a Ziploc sandwich bag or Tupperware bowl along with a scoop of protein powder and even 1/4 cup of nuts if you like. Anything that is “non-perishable”.

Make a bunch of these and stash them everywhere! The car, the office, your purse of briefcase… anywhere that you can possibly hide some of these goodies, you should. Because the next time you find yourself at work without something clean to eat, guess what? All you need is a hot cup of water from the coffee machine or water dispenser!

As you can see in the photo above, I even used these as part of my “Clean Eating Travel Food Arsenal” for my last trip. All I did was put some bottled water through the coffee maker in the hotel room, and voilà! An instant clean eating meal!

Didn’t I tell you that was simple?

I’ve been carrying around a ziploc of protein powder and sometimes I’m lucky enough to have a ziploc of almonds too, but I really like the idea of adding oatmeal! Perfect! Thanks for sharing!

HI Tiffany, I just discovered your blog, so happy I found it!
I was suprised to see some German recipes on here as well, actually I’m from the same area where you used to live!
I agree with what you say about being prepared, you should never leave the house without sufficient food to get you through the day.
For me since I travel quite a bit, making sure I have a good breakfast is very important. I also eat oatmeal every day.
An eco-friendlier alternative to the ziploc bags are reuseable mini tupperware boxes. I use those: http://www.nettlegreen.co.uk/p-172-mini-food-boxes.aspx
They are extremely convenient because they have enough space for 30g of dry oatmeal and whatever nuts etc you want to add to it. Then you just need to find hot water somewhere and you’re all set.

Marianne – That’s great! Thanks for sharing that link. You are from Stuttgart? I miss Germany so much. I would give anything to go back. Such a wonderful place.

  • Marianne

I’m from Tübingen actually, very close to Stuttgart.
When you grow up there it’s not really exciting but once you moved away you realise how beautiful it is down there. I live in Belgium now since 3 years, sometimes I miss the South of Germany. :-)

Marianne – I’ve been to Tubingen. Lovely place. And I can tell you as an American, any place in Europe is breath taking. I love the States, but Europe is amazing.

This isn’t quite so “instant”, but another idea (thanks to Laurel’s Kitchen) is to put your oats, etc into a wide mouth thermos (stainless steel preferably) pour in the hot water, almond milk, silk whatever you prefer and close it up before you go to bed, or before you leave for wherever. When you’re ready you have oatmeal cooked and ready to eat. The thermos (especially stainless steel) will keep it very hot as long as you don’t keep opening it. Laurel’s suggestion was for a hot breakfast for the family without having so much to do in the morning when trying to get everybody off for school and work.

Jodi – What an excellent idea! If you don’t mind, I’d like to share that in an upcoming post about school meals.

My oldest son was never much of a sandwich eater so I used a smaller wide-mouth thermos (no glass) to pack soups, stews, pastas, etc. in his lunchbox. I also ad one with a lid that could go into the freezer (like a built in gel-pack) to keep fuit salads, cottage cheese, applesauce, etc cold. For field trip days when we needed to brown-bag it, I froze a juice box and packed tuna salad or whatever he would eat at the time in half a pita pocket, along with some carrot and celery sticks and an apple or orange. The juice box kept everything cold until lunch time when it would be defrosted enough to drink. I tried to limit what had to be thrown away while still not having to worry about anything being left behind in another town or state.

this sounds so yummy I have to give it a try

    Lydia – It IS yummy!

What a great idea! I use protein powder alot but with lactose milk. Btw, is cottage cheese a clean food? Chocolate protein powder mixed with the cottage cheese is a yummy snack. Although perishable, don’t stash that one! Lol

Christine – Cottage cheese is one of those foods that comes down to a personal decision. When I ate dairy, I always included it. And I believe that most clean eaters do. However, if you look at the ingredients, it’s kind of a toss-up. Do what works for you.

Actually I’ve been doing this for several years except I use Old-Fashioned oats. If I don’t have a bowl, I use a styrofoam cup (sorry Green people), cover it with literally anything, and in just a few minutes, you have a cup of real whole grain oatmeal. The less processed the oats, the more they fill you. And the protein powder rebuilds the muscles after my workouts. So good.

    EFL – That’s wonderful!
