Clean Eating Ingredient: Chia Seeds

Clean Eating Chia Seeds

Did you have a Chia Pet when you were growing up?

I recently saw a commercial for them and almost fell off the couch. I didn’t think they were around any more! They were a fun project for kids.

But what that commercial never told you is that those Chia seeds are also incredibly healthy for you!

According to Dr. Andrew Weil (I love that guy! He’s amazing!):

Chia is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, even more so than flax seeds. And it has another advantage over flax: chia is so rich in antioxidants that the seeds don’t deteriorate and can be stored for long periods without becoming rancid. And, unlike flax, they do not have to be ground to make their nutrients available to the body. Chia seeds also provide fiber (25 grams give you 6.9 grams of fiber) as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc.

It’s fun to eat Che-Che-Che-Chia Seeds!

This little seed also has a fun side that has nothing to do with planting it. If you put it in your tea (or any liquid), it forms a gel-like substance around it and becomes very much like those tapioca balls you can have added your tea at Starbucks.

Clean Eating Ingredient: Chia Seeds

This not-so-well-known seed is a fabulous addition to any clean eating diet. In fact, I’ve replaced flax seed in my morning oats with Chia seeds all together. I get more “bang for my buck” with Chia seeds.

So what do you do with it?

  • Add it to your Greek yogurt
  • Sprinkle it over your cereal
  • Add it to a smoothie or protein drink
  • Add it to homemade protein bars
  • Add it to your tea or juice
  • Toast it and add it to your homemade trail mix
  • Sprinkle it over a clean eating fruit tart or other dessert

Nutrition Data

1 ounce (a little under 2 tablespoons) of Chia seeds equals:

  • Calories = 137
  • Fat = 9 gm
  • Cholesterol = 0 gm
  • Carbs = 12 gm
  • Fiber = 11 gm
  • Sugar = 0 gm
  • Protein = 4 gm

Do you use chia seeds? I’d love to hear what you do with them!

I bought a canister of chia seeds from GNC earlier this month. I’ve just been sprinkling it over oatmeal, but will definitely have to try that tapioca-like trick. Does the liquid have to be warm or hot for the chia seeds to react that way?

I’d like to try it in blended bubble tea, a Chinese concoction of tea, ice, rock sugar and tapioca pearls (yeah, that’s where Starbucks got the idea). And, it’s even better if you use black or green chai tea bags (Yogi Tea has a positively uplifting blend).

    Charlena –

It doesn’t matter if the liquid is hot or cold, although it may take an extra minute or two in cold liquid. But the effect is the same.

Thanks for the tea suggestion! I’ll give it a try!

I have been eating chia seeds for about two months now – I put them in my oatmeal every day and sometimes in yogurt. I still add flax to my eats- its a texture thing for me. I just mix it up – sometimes I add flax, sometimes I add the chia seeds!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Shannon – That’s fantastic! Nothing wrong with “mixing it up” a little!

  • Lori

I let the seeds soak in milk until they gel up then add it to my cereal. The texture is really different and, along with cinnamon, jazzes up my plain bran flakes.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

That’s awesome Lori! I’ll have to try that. Sounds like a fun way to eat your cereal!

  • Dawn

Hi ~ do you need to grind them like the flax or would just adding them be fine?
I make oatmeal/egg white pancakes for my breakfast and add my ground flax to these ~ if I started using the chia also would I just add them into the “pancake” mix? Thanks so much =)

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Hi Dawn – No, you don’t have to grind them like you do flax seed. You simply add them to whatever you are making. They have a subtle but wonderful flavor and are digested far more easily than flax.

  • Michelle

Every day for lunch at work I eat a plate of red and green shredded cabbage with a little balsalmic dressing and balsalmic vinegar… I add my chia seeds to that. A little extra crunch in my no mayo cole slaw!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Michelle – That sounds yummy! (And crunchy!)

  • http://foodjunkiefromtexas.blogspot.com/ Daphne

I add them to my smoothies in the morning. I also add them to my fruit salad. (My family never knows that I added something different. They look kind of like kiwi seeds :) .I have been grinding them, though. I have read that they go right through you whole. Who knows?

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Daphne – From what I’ve read, it’s flax seeds that go through you whole. Chia seeds actually get digested. But who knows. The “experts” always seem to change their minds! lol

I never thought of adding them to a fruit salad. Fantastic idea! Thanks!

  • Marianne

What do the little seeds taste like?
    Nutty like flaxseed?

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Marianne – They have a unique flavor. You could say they are nutty. They are definitely yummy! And I’m so excited…. I just found them in the bulk section at Whole Foods. So much more affordable!

I have been eating Chia for a year now. I love them so much, I started a company selling them. I bake with them, I sprinkle them on things, I grind them into Chia meal and use them in breads. I use them in chili and spaghetti sauces-they will thicken and add great nutrition. I make Chia gel and use it in smoothies. The great thing about them is that they are versatile. They take on the flavour of anything you put them in, especially if they absorb fluid. Try putting 2 tbsp of seeds in a container with a cup of frozen berries. The Chia seeds will absorb the fluids of the berries and will taste just like them. Add some yogurt for a great snack. I also substitute Chia anytime a recipe calls for bread or cracker crumbs. Great as a binder in burgers, meatballs etc. Chia to your health!

Thanks for all the ideas Debi. I’ll have to try some of them. I usually put them in my smoothies. I love the little crunch it gives. So yummy!

  • Melissa

I’ve been taking chia every day for just under a year, and the benefits are GREAT! Everything from stronger nails & healthier hair, to increased energy, regularity and reduced PMS symptoms.
I usually put a tablespoon in my green tea each morning, with a tablespoon of honey and 1/2 a teaspoon of cinnamon. It’s delish…and the great thing is that the ‘gel’ around the seeds carries the cinnamon thoughout the entire tea, rather than it just settling on the bottom. Drink it with a straw…mmm..mmm.mm.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Wow Melissa! That’s fantastic! Thanks for sharing your experience!

  • Jodi

Since you first posted this I’ve been adding them to my cereal or sprinkling them on cottage cheese along with ground flax seeds, pecans and walnuts. They are tasty. I haven’t tried the gel trick. I guess it sort of happens with the liquid part of cereal or yogurt. I wonder how cold hardy they are, how big th plants can get. I’m thinking cover crop/green manure in my gardenalong with clovers, vetch, barley, buckwheat, oats, etc. I want thinks that will grow in the fall but winter kill so I can dig them in before I plant in the spring. That will add a lot of organic matter to our dense clay soil without adding to the weed problem. I’ll let you know how it works.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Jodi – Yes please! Let me know!

  • http://www.milesmusclesmommyhood.blogspot.com/ JenniferLeah

interesting~I think I will give them a try; I have read about them from runner friends but was not sure what they were. You learn something new every day!!

  • Chrystal Nelson

I haven’t tried it yet, but I have heard that you can make an egg substitute with Chia seeds.
These are the instructions: To replace one egg, simply mix 1 tablespoon chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of water and let sit 15 minutes.
Seems easy enough – one of these days I’m going to try it :)

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Chrystal – That makes perfect sense actually. It would be worth a try.

  • Sheryl

I tried the chia seeds in my green tea with the cinnamon. I liked it. It may take me a bit to get used to that texture in my tea, but I’d like to try it in my yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Sheryl – It’s yummy in oats and yogurt!

  • Sheryl

About how much of the chia seeds should you try to have per day?

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

    Sheryl – That’s a personal choice. I shoot for 1-2 tbsp. But that’s me.
2 tablespoons of Chia = 7 grams of fiber, 2 grams of protein, 205 milligrams of calcium, 5 grams omega-3 (source)

    Hi Tiffany…
I have been on the net all day looking for a supplier in South Africa, were I can buy Chia seeds, to no avail… grrrr… so frustrating… sigh!!! It is so difficult finding all the ingredients I need to make your recipes. But I can get flax seeds, which I have been using. I have sent a couple of mails to some contacts I found on the net today, I hope that I get happiness soon.
Thank you so much for all your help, advice and recipes.
    Thankfully.
    Renee.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Renee – You’re welcome! And if you cannot get chia seeds, flax seeds are a fabulous substitute. My recipes are very versatile, so use what you have on hand.

  • http://www.4amazingks.blogspot.com Janet Randall

I learned about chia seeds from a friend after she read “Born to Run” and have started using them ever since. (Which ok has been just a couple of weeks–but my husband and I are hooked!) We’ve just been putting them in a cup or so of 100% no sugar added cranberry juice. Recently we tried mixing them up the way they are referenced in the book (which is also very good)–in water with a little lemon juice and agave nectar. It’s very refreshing and I love all of the health benefits! A word to the wise–with all of the fiber you sort of have to start with a little and then build up to a tablespoon, etc. ;)

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Janet – LOL! That’s good advice!

I love chia seeds too. They are fabulous, and you just can’t beat em’ for nutrition. Wonderful little miracle beads! :)
