Clean Eating Green Smoothies

Okay. I have to confess, it took me F.O.R.E.V.E.R. to try this. I just couldn’t work up the nerve to stick a handful of spinach into my fruity smoothie. It was way more than my little brain could handle. I had visions of dumping an entire blender of smoothie ingredients down the drain because I had dared to try and make it “green”.

I voiced my concerned on my FaceBook Fan Page (Like page??? – I’ll never get used to that), and was overwhelmed by the response I got. My fans strongly encouraged me to try it and promised me that you can’t even taste the spinach.

My first thought was… “ya, right”. But I suddenly had a wild hair and got up from my computer to go try it on the spot.

I blended the smoothie, poured it into a really nice cup, and then sat there and stared at it for a good 5 minutes. I have to tell you, it really took some courage for me to try that first sip.

Wanna know what it was like?

OMG!!! Sooooo Y.U.M.M.Y!!!!

Seriously people, you’ve GOT to try this. You honestly cannot taste the spinach. And you get 3 of your 5-6 servings of fruits and veggies for the day in one cup. You just can’t beat it!

In fact, I’ve been drinking one green smoothie a day ever since. It’s the perfect meal replacer when you’re on the go.

Trust me. You’re gonna love this! Here’s the recipe.

Clean Eating Green Smoothies
(Makes 1 protein shake)

Ingredients
1/2 cup non fat milk
1/2 cup water
2 cups raw spinach
1 small banana
1 scoop whey protein powder (optional)
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1 tbsp. chia seeds (you can also use flax seeds)

Directions

Step 1 – Be sure all your produce is clean.

Step 2 – Place all ingredients in a blender and blend.

Step 3 – Pour into a cup and serve.

Drink and Enjoy!

Munchkin Helpers:

If you have little ones, here’s how they can help (With close supervision, of course).

Once you get the hang of these, you can let your munchkins choose which ingredients they want to put in the blender. They can put everything into the blender so long as you make sure it’s unplugged. My little guy has accidentally turned on the blender a couple of times when I wasn’t looking. That’s not a scene I care to have unfold in my kitchen, thank you. So please take this precaution. I never plug it in anymore until I’m really ready to turn it on.

Great way to sneak in the veggies! I’ll have to try this one with my kids soon. I bet they will never know…lol

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Kim – They won’t. Mine has no idea! lol

  • Cristye

That sounds really yummy!! Im gonna have to try it today for lunch since im going to be doing a lot of running around!! Thanks!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Cristye – You bet! Let me know how you like it!

  • http://kitchenmeditation.blogspot.com roxan

Slowly but surely i’ve been inching towards trying a green smoothie also… But I’m really scared of it too! Glad you had a great experience, it helps to nudge me a little closer to trying it.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Roxan – I promise, you can’t taste the spinach. It might add a slight sweetness, but there’s no spinach taste at all. Go for it girl! Be brave! You can do it!

  • http://foodjunkiefromtexas.blogspot.com/ Daphne

I have been doing this for a while. My son loved my smoothie that I was making for him and then he figured out I put spinach in it and now, for some reason, he doesn’t like it anymore. Great. You really can’t taste the spinach at all. It changes the color of your smoothies a little, but that’s about it.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Daphne – Kids are funny that way. They like something until they “see” something, and then they don’t like it anymore. Thankfully, there are lots of other ways to sneak veggies into your kid’s diet. Try blending some spinach into his spaghetti sauce. You can’t taste it there either.

Okay, if you feel the same way as I do about mixing your fruits and veggies up in the blender as I do…I’m going to give this a go. I looks beautiful!

  • Karen

I LOVE Green smoothies. I don’t do dairy, so no whey powder and I use almond milk instead. I also grind my flax seed before I put it in. I buy fresh fruit in season and freeze so that I can have smoothies all year round. By only letting the fruit thaw partway it comes out like a nice thick shake. Yummo!

  • http://dailygreenbar.blogspot.com Jane

Hi. wow love that color ! Vibrant, like how green smoothies can make you feel- I love them . Funny how people react to drinking spinach -first step is getting others to drink it…I was so inspired and converted family friends too.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Annmarie – go girl! You’ll love it!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Jane – That’s great! The hardest part is getting people to try it. I find it’s best to tell them about the spinach AFTER they’ve tried the smoothie. Evil maybe. But far easier. lol

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Karen – Grinding flax seed is the only way to eat it (in my humble opinion). It’s really the only way our bodies absorb the nutrients from the seeds. Otherwise, we pass them out whole. Great idea on freezing the fruit. Some day I will own a deep freezer just for these kinds of things. (Sigh…) And yes, you’re so right. Frozen or partly frozen fruit makes all the difference!

  • Ann

I always put spinach in mine! And I use rice milk, flax and frozen berries.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

    Ann – Yum!

Jo – I’ve seen that site before. It’s a good one! I’ll have to try some of her recipes in the near future. Thanks for reminding me!

  • Kimberly

I am a poor veggie eater and I tried the green smoothie with almond milk and more blueberries instead of bananas and I liked it! I tried saving the other half of the recipe for the next day in the fridge. Bad idea! It smelled awful and I spilled it out. I just halve the recipe next time. I can’t believe I like it! Love your recipes!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Kimberly – Really tasty, isn’t it? Almond milk sounds yummy! I’ll have to try it that way.
    Thanks for reading my blog!

  • Jodi

Well, I love fruits and vegetables, so the only problem I have with getting enough is eating when we are out of town. But this definitely looks like a good way to (try to) get more vegs into our picky small fry. Both of them LOVE olives, black or green-I have to take the pimentoes out for one kid. Weird, huh?

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Jodi – Not weird at all. Kids can be very picky. In fact, my husband is pickier than most kids I know. So I’m use to the “picky thing”. I’m sure the kids will love this! My son sure does!

  • kristen

does it have to be fresh raw spinach or will frozen work? i would guess lessen the added water maybe?

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Kristen – I use fresh spinach. I’m not sure how frozen spinach works, but it can’t hurt to try.

  • Theresa

Please try the smoothie with Coconut Milk. The taste is fabulous!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

    Theresa – I will!

  • http://www.hethercrawford.wordpress.com Hether

We LOVE these in my house! My kids even ask for green smoothies. :) Mine don’t look that pretty tho! GREAT pic. I’m going to have to start using pretty glasses and garnishment!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Hether – Fabulous! My little guy loves them too. I do find that pretty glasses add some extra flavor. Haven’t figured out how that works yet… ;)

  • Jennifer

Okay, I’m gonna try this. You had pretty much the same reaction I’ve been having, but you liked it once you tried it…so I’ll be brave too! :-)

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Jennifer – Go girl!! It’s really good. I promise!

  • Lydia

I made this for breakfast on Sunday. My kids kept quizzing me about what was in the smoothie. I said once you finish it I will disclose the contents. My eldest guessed spinach and I would not answer her lol. Finally when they were done I told them, and they were surprised that they could not taste it(spinach). So I said how do you prefer you spinach and they said in a smoothie lol Thanks ;)

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Lydia – Yay!!! Such a great way to get kids to eat their spinach!

  • Carrie

Just ran across your blog and saw your green smoothie. I was getting ready to make a smoothie so tried it out. It was really good. Looks like you have lots of other yummy recipes I will have to try.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Carrie – Glad you liked it! Spinach is a wonderful and healthy addition to ANY smoothie!

  • Tammy

Just found your CE site and have been perusing it checking out all your yummy recipes! I have to admit that I have hesitated to try spinach in my smoothies just for the simple fact that it sounded gross. I decided to get brave and went out to the store to get some spinach to try it out…very yummy! My kids were lickin’ it out of the cup so it also passed their taste test as well. Looking forward to trying out some of your other recipes.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Tammy – Yay!!! I LOVE it when I can convert people to spinach smoothies! Congrats! So happy the kids enjoyed it too!

  • christine m.

I felt the same way about spinich until I began using about two weeks ago. You can’t even taste it and it’s good for you.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Christine – Yep! All you taste is everything else you put into the smoothie. It’s great!

  • Court

I make a smoothie every day that has half a banana, non-fat plain kefir, almond milk, and almond butter in it. I’m wondering if the spinach would work in that, or if it would be weird. Any thoughts??

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Court – That would definitely work! You can’t taste the spinach in a green smoothie. It’s a great way to get extra nutrients without altering flavor. Enjoy!

  • Erin

You can use kale too – if I put berries in, they balance out the kale and you don’t taste it!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Erin – that’s great to know! Thanks!

  • brandi

What kind of whey protein powder do you use?

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Brandi – It’s 100% whey protein powder. I got it in bulk at the health food store.

  • desiree

you know,,if you blend a 1/2 bunch spinach, 4 carrots and 1/2 head romaine lettuce with a cup water, it tastes like chocolate milk, i couldn’t believe it..you will never have it any other way..great morning booster.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Desiree – Are you pulling my leg? Cause you know I’m gonna go try this…

  • desiree

no really, its great for getting more leafy greens into your diet. another i just love is 4 carrots and bout 1/2 cup soaked almonds, pinch cinnamon..1 cup water or to your thickness likes, and 2 dates.yummm to die for.lolz.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Desiree – Wow! I’ll have to try that! Thanks! I actually have one more smoothie recipe coming up with dates in it, but it’s nothing like yours. Dates add sooo much sweetness! Yummy!

  • desiree

yuppers, dates can really make a smoothies taste better without adding too much different flavours. i use max 2 per 3 cups smoothie and i usually split the smoothies in half, ill eat 1/2 in the morn, the second half mid afternoon.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

    Desiree – Fabulous!!

  • ghalya

over 400 cal — is that right?

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Ghalya – Yes, but keep in mind that’s for the entire recipe.

  • Candie

Ok, I have to say I was very curious about this recipe so I had to try it. It’s good but I have to put it in a cup that I can’t see through because it looks like dirt! So why does yours look so pretty and mine, well, it’s hard to drink if I look at it lol.

  • Anonymous

Candie – How does it taste?

  • Candie

It tasted just fine. I tasted mostly banana and didn’t taste spinach at all. I was just trying to be funny. The color is what looked like dirt or should I say mud. I’m gonna make it again tomorrow. This is all new to me.

  • Anonymous

Candie – Oh!! Ha! Ya, the color can be a bit off putting. BUT, it’s tasty and you get so many great nutrients!

  • Kelly

Now, I have been starting to incorporate clean eating into my diet and just started reading up on green smoothies. I’ve watched a lot of youtube videos and read a lot of websites, and a lot of people say to steer clear of dairy. I’m a big fan of skim milk and have been using yogurt cheese in my fruit smoothies. To start drinking 1-2 green smoothies a day (my goal), I’m wondering if I should stay away from adding dairy to it. Any thoughts on this? Also, did you notice a difference in weight loss when you started eating the green smoothie daily?

  • Anonymous

Kelly – The biggest difference I noticed what in how I felt. And for me, that equated to being more active. So yes, in that way, it helped with weight loss because I was better able to exercise in my day. I had more energy overall.

I haven’t heard of the issue with dairy. I avoid it because I have an allergy to it. But before I discovered that, I used dairy in my smoothies all the time. Yogurt cheese is also especially healthy. So I wouldn’t worry too much unless you have some significant reason to avoid dairy.

  • jewel

Get a big bag of spinach. Wash it even though it says it is ready to eat. stuff as much as you can into a small ziplock baggie or container. Freeze it. Spinach tends to go slimy kinda fast. Frozen spinach adds a nice texture to the smoothie. Frozen blueberries cover the green color. Banana adds sweet. I freeze the ones that are too ripe and use them. I add almonds and plain yogert for protien and whatever else is laying around!

  • Anonymous

    Jewel – Great tip! Thanks!

  • Anonymous

Jazmin – I no longer eat dairy either. It should be just fine. Enjoy!

  • Anonymous

Annette – Agreed. I’d give my left shoe for a Vitamix. Some day…. some day…

  • Anonymous

haha!!! Yes, they are very good! Enjoy!

Tiffany – I’ve lost 60 pounds not counting calories. And please remember that these are very nutritious calories. I’d rather ingest 400 nutritious calories than 200 empty calories.
