Clean Eating And Flu Shots

Clean Eating And Flu Shots

I’ve been really struggling with this concept, so I have to ask you:  Are you still living clean if you get a flu shot?

My son is at the age where vaccines are part of the drill at the doctors office. Part of MY drill, not his.

You see, every time I take him into the doctor’s office, I get the same lecture and concerned looks from the doctors about the fact that my son has not had all his vaccines yet.

I got him his tetanus (and diphtheria, because they don’t come separate) shot when he started crawling because I was concerned about what he may crawl in or on in his daily explorations. But he has had no other vaccines to date.

I keep trying to explain to them that my real concern is the frequency and number of shots given at such a young age. I just think there are too many shots all at once. Their poor little nervous systems can’t keep up. I mean, a hepatitis shot the day they are born? How many babies do you know that are going to go out and share needles with somebody the day they are born? Not likely. Plus, their little immune systems aren’t even up and running yet to create the necessary antibodies the vaccine is supposed to create!

But I digress.

When you consider that a vaccine is essentially filled with chemicals and preservatives, and you eat clean in order to try and avoid getting those very chemicals in your food, are you still “clean” if you get a flu shot? I mean, the whole point of eating clean is to avoid chemicals and preservatives. To put only real and living foods into your real and living body.

I’m not saying that getting a vaccine of any kind is wrong. It’s a totally personal decision. But I struggle with this. I haven’t had a flu shot in years, and I certainly will NOT be getting the H1N1 vaccine. They don’t even know if it works, and they certainly have not had the time to do the necessary research to prove it’s safe. But what about the regular flu shot? Is it worth braving those chemicals in your body to avoid a simple bout of the flu?

What about the one person in every million people who get the neurological disease called Guillain-Barré Syndrome from the flu shot. Is it worth the risk?

I realize people die each year from the flu. But I am a 35-year-old woman who is relatively healthy. I’m eating right, and I exercise 6 days a week. Do I need a flu shot? Is it really worth the risk? Can I still call myself “clean” if I get one?

So, what I’m trying to ask in a very long-winded sort of way is, are flu shots a “healthy” part of a clean lifestyle?

    I would say no…

Mum husband and I don’t take any shots/vacines and when we have kids we dont’ plan on letting them get any either. It just feels… wrong.

Did you have much trouble when your son was born with him not getting vacines?

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

    Hi Talia,

    Thanks for the comment!

Actually, I had to get a notarized letter from a lawyer that said I did not want my son to recieve any vaccines. I had to hand it out to all the hospital staff so they wouldn’t give my son any vaccines while I was in the hospital. We did allow them to put an ointment in his eyes right after the birth, but that was for other reasons. Other than that, they didn’t give him anything because of that letter.

But I was warned by my doctor that it was important to have a legal letter. She had another patient who did not want her newborn to recieve the vaccine, but she didn’t have a legal note, and the hospital staff “accidently” gave him the vaccine. Not good.

I was pleased to find that they were very respectful of my wishes once they saw that I meant business.

I know I had all my vaccines as a child, but they were not given in the amounts or frequencies that they are given out today. In fact, I just got a call from my pediatrician informing me that my son had not yet had his flu shot and that I should schedule an appointment to do so. I just laughed. Even now, they just don’t get it.

    Good luck!

It’s one thing to eat clean, but “live clean” sounds like a completely different project. If you are going to try and avoid synthetics, chemicals and everything else man-made for health it goes way beyond food, medicine, and body/hair products. You’ll need to eliminate any form of public transportation; avoid shopping centers, stores or buildings where commercial cleaners are used(including schools); avoid the public parks because of herbicides and pesticides; pretty much avoid breathing the air here on planet earth.
It becomes a matter of personal choice and how far you want to take it. Pollutants, irritants, allergens, and other ‘risks’ are everywhere.

    Hi Aaron,

You make a very good and valid point.

I suppose it does come down to how far you want to take it. I simply posted my question out of curiosity for what other clean eaters think about flu shots. I know a lot of people do go the lengths to wear only natural fibers, eat only organic foods and use only natural body products. So I was curious to know where people stand on the flu shot. But I suppose it all comes down to where you want to draw the line. More food for thought.

    Thanks for stopping by!

Well, I’m old enough to have gone to school with kids who had polio. My uncle was a doctor and made sure we had our polio shots which became available shortly before I started school. I had measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox. I was very worried when they stopped giving smallpox vaccinations about the time my oldest was born. People used to die of these diseases. That they are rare or non-existant in this country (USA) is because of extensive vaccination programs. Most of the doctors today, except for those in my generation who are or will soon be retiring, have never even seen these diseases unless they have worked in developing countries.
Tiffany, hospitals are very dirty places. You are putting yourself and your family at risk. Please be scrupulous about handwashing while at work and especially before eating and immediately before you leave and again when you get home. Get out of your work clothes and launder them and shower ASAP. I would recommend the vaccines especially because you work in a hospital. We are getting our little ones vaccinated, but not on the usual schedule. We make extra appointments and get their shots at different times, not multiple shots at once. We too are concerned about overwhelming immature immune systems with too much at once. But we feel the risk of not getting the immunizations (getting the diseases) far outweighs the risks of the shots, especially since they have removed Thimerisol (a mercury compound) as a preservative. These are my observations and opinions, of course.

Do you take your own soap to work? I used to because I am allergic to perfume and even some products labelled fragrance free or unscented contain masking fragrances. What’s that about? So your shampoo won’t clash with your deodorant? For those of us who are allergic to fragrances or want to avoid the pthalates used to keep them long-lasting, even label reading isn’t always enough, especially since these things are considered proprietary info and are protected.
You might want to google the ingredients in the hand soaps and waterless hand sanitizers if you can find out what they are. Just some suggestions. I don’t mean to sound bossy.

    Hi Jodi,

Yes, I know hospitals are dirty. And I do wash my hands often. Thankfully, I work in the physical therapy department, so I’m not really “in the thick of it”. But I know I still have to be careful.

The hospital has announced that H1N1 has practically dropped out of existence in our area. So I’m not overly concerned there.

As far as my son is concerned, it’s not that they give many shots in one sitting (although, I wish they didn’t “bundle” them like the MMR shot), it’s that every time I go into the doctor’s, it’s time for yet another shot. It’s to many in to short of a time span.

The jury is still out for me. I’ll let you know what I decide!

Take care… and thanks for your concern. It’s appreciated.

Tiffany – I’m not trying to contradict that fact that you don’t like the Hepatitis shot for the babies, but I would assume that it is more for the foodborne illness side rather than the needle/sex side. You could contract Hepatitis in improperly handled food and that could be transferred to the baby through breast feeding.

I can see where you’re coming from, and yes I think doctors go to extremes now days, however, I do believe certain vaccines have their place. My brain is too fried to think of which ones (just got done with my Microbiology course haha), but yeah I do believe it would be for food born Hep.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Catherine – Thanks! I think my main argument with that is that it takes several weeks for a baby’s immune system to kick in. They get a vaccine before their little bodies can even produce the anti-bodies. It just makes no sense to me. But I can certainly appreciate your take on it.

    Thanks for sharing!

This years vaccine is a 2 in 1. It is a combination of the flu vaccine and the swine flu vaccine. Last yr, most of the people (read:children) that got sickest from the swine flu were the ones that got the vaccination. Do you know that they rushed the vaccine out so quickly that there were NO clinical trials?
Increase vitamin D3 and there’s usually no need for the flu vaccine. I don’t get it. My husband does as he has copd and catches colds and flu at the drop of a hat although, the last 2 times he got the flu anyway. Look it up at Dr. Mercola’s website, mercola.com . It really can be a conundrum.

  • Amy

I did not have any vaccines untill i was in high school. I did get chicken pox and measels etc but even if you get the shot you could get those things. I also worked for a Chiropracter whom his children NEVER had ANY shots. All the daycares and schools try to scare you and say the child cant be there unless they are current on all their shots but the truth is if you tell them you are not getting them immunized for personal or religious beliefs you dont have to. You just sign a waiver stating you dont want to and you are fine. This will work all the way through college. If you eat healthy and take all your precausions you have no need to inject yourself with these things. My son got a couple of shots when he was 3 months old then i didnt give him anymore shots until he was almost 2 years old and even at that point i always spread them out. They like to do 5 shots at a time, that is so crazy to me. Dont forget the rights you have as a parent/person. Seems the medical field always goes over board. A shot is a live virus you are injecting inside you. I know tons of people that everytime they get the flu shot they come down with the flu! Yet the doctors say the shot is suppose to build the antibodies to PREVENT you from getting the flu. If you are going to get it anyways just take your chances and stear clear of the shot! lol (my opinion of course) I never ever get the flu shot for my son or myself. That is me though

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Amy – Thanks for that! And of course, now that they are including the swine flu vaccine in the flu shot (no way to separate them, I’m told), there’s no way I’m getting that flu shot! There just has not been enough testing on the swine flu vaccine, and they’ve proven the hysteria surrounding it was just that. Hysteria. Of course, we all still have to be careful. But there’s no way I’m getting that shot or giving it to my child. No way.

  • Tabetha

In regards to the flu shot, I think it is a relatively mild personal decision unless you have an outstanding medical condition. The flu shot this year is a single shot, and it includes H1N1. You take it, maybe it prevents the flu, maybe you get it anyway. Flu happens! But, luckily we are almost out of flu season, so it is less of a concern now.
Vaccinating children though is another story. I know a lot of parents feel strongly about this. One thing to consider is that the research condemning vaccinating children put out years ago has been proven as a hoax. The person responsible for that research, in fact, MADE UP his results. That is truly disgusting because many people decided not to vaccinate their children based on false information. However, your perspective for not vaccinating your child is different.
I will say, as someone who works in healthcare, I believe in vaccinating children, and when I have them will do so. I’ve heard of children die because they weren’t vaccinated, and that is a horrible situation for everyone involved. I guess you have to way the pros and cons of vaccinating your children, and be responsible for your own decisions.
God Bless! Maybe consider the flu shot next year instead!

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Tabetha – Thanks! I believe what I’ve decided to do is give him everything except the MMR shot. I know they say that there has been no connection found between autism and the MMR shot, but I know one too many kids who became autistic after that shot. I will also be spacing out my son’s shots considerably. I really believe that it’s just too much all at once these days. Thanks for weighing in!

This is such a great conversation. I hope you don’t mind if I weigh in over here too, Tiffany! Here’s our story:

All throughout elementary school our daughter was asthmatic, had allergies and was constantly sick, missing school for entire weeks at a time. She was on four different prescription meds and had to use a nebulizer. She even got the chicken pox, despite being vaccinated for it. Every year she seemed to just get sicker. During 5th grade another mom told me that if I thought that was bad, wait until Jr. High and High School. This was right after the pediatrician had told us to accept that this was how her life was going to be. That did it for me. I went to the bookstore, found some books on natural health, started educating myself, and changed our lifestyle and eating habits immediately.

Our daughter is 16 now, and hasn’t had an attack or needed asthma or allergy meds for years. (Now the docs say, oh she just outgrew it.) Actually, none of us need meds anymore for anything, even seasonal allergies. She did get swine flu last year, and was back to normal health in under 48 hours, and was never really very sick from it. And she never contracted the wave of mono that went through her school last year. We saw both as a triumph.

We credit this entirely to our clean lifestyle, and vastly improved immune systems, due to eliminating the toxic overload of meds and vaccines. None of us has had a vaccine since that day. We eat clean, take supplements, and spend our healthcare $$ on building our health from the inside out. I read all of the popular natural health sites, then decide on the course of action that seems appropriate for my family. The changes in our overall health have been such a blessing, and have given us such peace compared to the frantic illness-revolved lifestyle we were living before.

I wrote all of this because I want you adorable young mothers to know that you can do it, and it will make a difference! Yes, it’s sometimes expensive, and inconvenient, and you will receive criticism. But if you know in your heart that you are making the right choice for your family, I encourage you to avoid conventional medical pressure and give natural health a try. It has changed our lives forever! I will always wish we had tried this approach in the beginning, but am incredibly grateful that we did finally get there.

My best wishes to you all!

Andrea – What a wonderful story to share. Thank you! I feel the same way. I always turn to natural remedies first, and so far, they have always done the trick. I refuse to get the flu shot now because you cannot get it without the swine flu vaccination included. There just has not been enough testing to prove it’s safe. And frankly, the chances of catching the swine flu at this point (in my area) are pretty slim. Not impossible, but slim. I think people get so caught up in the hysteria of 5 people dying that they forget how many hundreds of people die from the regular flu every year. Yet plenty of people have not gotten the regular flu shot in the past, and are probably healthier for it.

Thanks again for sharing your story!

After seeing a child dying of pertussis in the pediatric ICU while in nursing school I vowed then and there to have my future children fully vaccinated. It’s a personal choice and it should be up to every parent. But if you’re going to make this decision don’t take it lightly and skip vaccines because they ‘feel wrong.’ Do your research and discuss it openly with your doctor. I recommend The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears.

  • http://www.thegraciouspantry.com The Gracious Pantry

Sarah – Oh, I’ve definitely discussed it with my doctor. No worries there. He has had the pertussis shot. I relented when we had an outbreak around here. And he’ll be getting all of them except the MMR shot. He’ll just be getting them at a much slower rate then what kids get today.

  • Vev

I have a cousin that was damaged FROM the polio shot I don’t believe in vaccines, I believe in building the immune system naturally like the lady said above. Bravo to the blogger that got a letter from her lawyer, I never thought of that!

    Vev – Thank you!

    Hi Tiffany.

I am a health professional. I like Sarah’s advice above, and I appreciate the nonjudgmental tone of, and the valuable information contained in, the comments being shared here. Deciding what’s right regarding vaccines for oneself or one’s child is no easy thing.

I have asthma that is triggered by respiratory illnesses and things like extreme temperatures or very strenuous exercise, so I get the flu shot because it has actually helped me on 2 occasions to have a lesser version of what is “going around”. I have had 2 bouts of pneumonia – both were from the flu, both prior to when I began getting flu shots. Also, one of my children, now an adult, has the same problem. When he was 4 years old, he was hospitalized x 4 days with severe pneumonia and had one crisis during which the doctor wondered if she/we were going to “lose” him. He has been getting flu shots ever since, and it has not occurred again.
Since I went Gluten and milk-free, I have had many fewer illnesses generally, so Andrea’s story about her family’s experience really resonates for me as well. However, since I am regularly-exposed to those with the flu every year through my work and because I was SO sick with the 2 pneumonias, I had back in the 1990′s, I am just too “chicken” to go without a flu shot!!
I am over 50 – I also had pertussis and measles as an infant – my mom says I was VERY sick with both.

Having said all that, I think there are certain vaccines that, if I was a new parent today, I probably would not consent to being given to my infant. I was stunned when a relative listed for me what was on the schedule for her new infant – she also “put the brakes on” and declined or postponed several vaccines. My children, who are now young adults, had their shots as scheduled, but I worried each and every time. I didn’t feel I had a choice at the time – I think it is excellent that young parents are asking more questions and taking a very hard look at this issue. One thing we did decide to have them get as teenagers was the meningitis vaccine – after researching it, we concluded that it prevents tragic and needless deaths.
